When did people really start keeping reptiles as pets?

The ancient Egyptians attempted domesticating lots of animals (including cheetahs and gazelles). Crocodile mummies are relatively common, and lizard mummies have been found; in the case of the crocodiles (and probably the lizards) these were most likely not pets, just sacred animals that were mummified due to their connection with various gods.

I was surprised to find that bearded dragons and australian water dragons were kept as pets in the very early 1900s england and germany. Bert Langerwerf cited and quoted sources in his book on water dragons. I can't remember where I learned that bit of trivia about bearded dragons but I remember the source quoted the price they were sold for in those days...

Do some research on the Victorian Age.
This was a huge time of people attempting to create natural environments and keep wild fauna inside their homes.
