Hi all! My name is Wendy and I have been looking into purchasing a male panther. It is something I have been thinking about for a few years now and after alot of research and learning I think Im about ready to go ahead and jump in :) I have pretty much decided on a housing set-up - I would like to get one about 4-6m old so I would start w/ a med size cage (prob reptibreeze to start) then in the mean time will be building a custom cage (complete w/ a mistking:)), I have seen alot of really great ideas on here and on google images too. My main problem right now is deciding on how to actually CHOOSE a good healthy cham from a reputable breeder. Of course everyone claims to be the best but Im still so new to this that I am having trouble deciding who really is. Also, when purchasing a juvinile can you tell how the colors may appear when they get older (patterns etc)? How closely do they resemble the sire when they become adults? Any advice on this or ANY topic would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!
-oh ya, BTW - I live in north central mass, I am not against traveling a few hrs to purchase one in person and I am willing to have one shipped if you guys really think thats the way to go too, I know its a little more difficult living up here :(

Welcome!
if you are going to start with a 4-6 month old, i would just put him into his adult cage. then you arent spendin gmoney on a cage he will outgrow in months.

also, you can purchase from any of our site sponsors, they are all good.
upper right corner of the site, view our sponsors.

and as for coloring- for example, the sire is a red bar ambilobe, the son at 6 months old, has red bars... well he can suddnely change and get blue bars instead.
some can look like the dad, others like the moms dad. or others till totally different all together.

it just depends on the baby.
Good luck!

Hello and welcome!:)
Here's Jann's blog you might find it helpful! I agree with camimom, if you're thinking of getting a juvenile, don't bother with a small cage, get one that can be suitable for an adult chameleon.
I have a male panther too, they're awesome! You'll love it!
If you get the change to actually see the chameleon look at his skin and eyes(not sunk in) to judge the health of it. When you're handle it pay attention to his grip, quiet strong for a little thing like a juvenile chameleon can be... I'm still do it just to make sure my "baby" is strong and healthy as he looks.:p
Any of the sponsors is great and reliable. Good luck:)

Hi and welcome to the forum. I agree with what Camimom said, there is no gaurantee but I think if you pick a chameleon and you like the way the sire and the dams sire look you have a better chance. Good luck!

THANKS GUYS! I have already been on that forum and its great! you can ask them to send photos of the babies they have, see if you can pic a particular one.
and shipping isn that bad.
ive had two chameleons shipped to me, one from cali, one from SC, and no issues so far. BTW Im in MD so a bit of a stretch to ship.
THey pack them really well, and if cold enough, use heat packs to help.

I imagine that the whole shipping process and new home would be quite stressfull on the lil guy, any tips on how to make the initial introduction to his new home as stress free as possible? thx again guys

When he arrives. he will probably be inside a deli cup.
just place the cup inside his cage, and let him climb out on his own.

before putting him in though, mist the whole cage down really really well, so he has water to drink

make sure you have lots of vines and plants for him to hide in while he acclimates.

I'm in the same boat with the cage thinking, I'm expecting my first male veiled cham in a week and bought a reptibreeze large thinking that it would be alright. I set it up last night and it's not going to last more than 6 mos and cages are expensive to be buying all of the time. :)

the large wont be big enough for an adult male veiled.
24x224x48 is needed.

yea I figured that much, He's coming tuesday, and he'll only be 3-4 months. The 18x18x36 that I have now should last a couple months shouldn't it?
