Hello fellow chameleon lovers.

I have a bit of a story, So hope people are okay with this.

My brother passed away recently. and had a chameleon. But the chameleon to me was not very looked after (he had learning disability) the chameleon is about a year from what i am told. I have brought the chameleon a repti-breeze XL and but need some help with the bits inside.I have brought all the plants that are non toxic. And i have two plastic sheets on the side of the repti breeze.

At the moment i have a light fixture that is in a cage like this one -

I also have a UVB at the back of the reptibreeze that looks to be a 5% which is getting old. it is not in a canopy or anything.

At the moment these are basic solutions until i know what i need to buy. ive had many reptiles in past but never a chameleon. And i havent had time to prepare.

Someone said i need a canopy i found this

http://www.livefoods.co.uk/product_info.php/exo-terra-compact-top-canopy-30cm-pt2225-p-2094

Sorry for the long message, I just want to get it done ASAP. also someone said i need some reflectors or something? I use Livefoods.co.uk to buy my things of usually. But am prepared to spend anything. Also he is not eating very much. I dont think ive seen him eat at all. So i think ill get him a vet visit too.

Thanks guys

Dan

I do recommend you get him to the vet for a check up.

As for the lights, you don't NEED a dome or reflectors. It does help, and it is a little better, but you don't have to have it in order for the chameleon to be healthy and survive.

check its poop, if is yellow with black or white with black, if it is yellow then he needs more water, I have noticed that chamelons don´t eat that much if the are dehydrated.

also how long have you had him? if he is in a new place he may need time to acclimated before eating anything, otherwise try flies or waxworms to get him started with eating

First of all, I would like extend my condolences on the loss of your brother. So good of you to take on his chameleon. If you could fill out this form for us we can better help you get situated. As far as the uvb light they really should be changed out about every 6 months and you also need a basking light which should be housed in a dome fixture. A pic of your chameleon and current set up would be quite beneficial so we can see if your chameleon has health issues that you would not be aware of, but we might.

how do you suspend your basking light then?

As you can see ive got the UVB at the back of the reptibreeze. i have two big plants. Vines and i have a dripping system (i now spray it instead of setting up the dripper)

the Light is in the cage. But i dont think its giving of enough heat. I do not have a thermometre that is great. i had one that was temp in there (which is in there now) but getting a digital probe thermometre and a hygrometre? one for humidity

i think hes a yemen?

That's an..interesting... casque o.0 good luck on your new addition, sorry about your brother

That's what i was thinking. It looks like he's missing the top half of his casque or something. anyways, he seems to be in decent condition and with the adjustments you're making, he should be fine. And yes, that is Yemen (Veiled) chameleon.

what is wrong with his casque? anything i should be concerned about?

thank you for the comments :)

I honestly can't tell you what could be wrong. I mean the cham looks fine. Its just a normal casque looks like this.

yes I agree with the others that his casque looks stunted which could be the effects of metabolic bone disease perhaps. However, his limbs look pretty good and not all curvy which is consistent with MBD. He definitely has something weird going on with his casque though.

Okay well good thing is the vet will be able to say. hes been really happy today. been going around the reptibreeze. still not keen on crickets/locust though. had a poo earlier. seemed yellow as it was coming out?

Hi there, first off my heartfelt condolences on the loss of your brother. I can appreciate that this is not a great time for you to be getting a chameleon settled into a new home but please know that your brothers chameleon is very thankful and appreciates the care and concern.

There are a couple things that are jumping out at me, in the absence of you filling out a 'How to ask for help' form. First and foremost you need to take the heat bulb out from inside the cage IMMEDIATELY. If a fly or cricket were to land on the bulb and the Cham were to try to catch it he could burn his tongue badly and eventually he could lose it from rot or amputation. Also, just basking too close to an 'open' bulb can cause severe burns. You will need to buy a bulb dome for this bulb and them you can place it on top.

Also, you have bought a great cage - it is nice and big and will provide ample room for roaming and hiding BUT...if you raise it up off the floor your chameleon will feel much more comfortable and much happier. Chams like to be up high - they would rather you look 'up' to them than have you hovering over them - makes them nervous, like they are being hunted! Even a couple feet off the floor will provide a sense of security for him.

If you could fill out the 'Help' form, we can continue to steer you in the right direction. In the meantime a visit to an experienced reptile vet could go a long way in helping this guy live a long and healthy life!

Yellow urates (the squishy, soft part of the poop) indicate he is dehydrated. I would get that dripper set up and increase hand misting to 3 - 4 times per day with warm water.

ChameleonMom

First i would like to say thank you for your guidance and advice on makeing this chameleon happier and healthier.

I will fill out the form, The reason i havent is because i was in a state of panic and as you know grievance so my mind isnt right at the moment.

I will fill out this form as soon as i get to work tonight.

I am currently makeing the following differences for the chameleon.

- I am trying to find a table that it will sit on or something that will raise it, I dont know what i can use yet but will be sorted by the end of the week.

- The dome, could you possibly do me a huge favor and show me what kind of dome on livefoods.co.uk so i can purchase it? And wouldnt the dome be to far away from the basking area?

- I have currently increased sprayings to the reptibreeze to 3 times a day. With warm water. he does hide but comes out of hideing (which i read can take 5 minutes).

I am very interested in gettnig this chameleon happy again. I have had a dome reflector before for my bearded dragons, Is it the same type?

thank you for your help. Also i have named the chameleon Rueben
