dreading the day i had to fill this out

Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - The species, sex, and age of your chameleon. How long has it been in your care?

veiled, female, not for sure on age, i would guess well over a year. it has been in my care for two days.

Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon?

i dont handle her much, just got her for free yesterday

Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? What amount? What is the schedule? How are you gut-loading your feeders?

i have 4 crickets in the cage, 1 meal worm. i feed them repcal cricket food.

Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule?

pretty random really, but i would say i dont dust the crickets 4 out the 7 days. never going longer than a week and a half without d3. i do dust them with regular calcium about 2 to three times a week. this info wouldnt apply to her, but i have 1 adult male and female ( the male just died yesterday from a freak accident) but they both look beautiful and very healthy, good eaters too.

Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking?

i have a water bottle, gently mist them. she seemed very dehydrated when i gave her a drink when we got home from the vet, drinking for what seemed like an hour. unusual long drinking time.

Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites?

havent seen any droppings yet, pretty sure shes never been tested

History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you.

like i said had her for a grand total of two days, the girl i got her from said she had purchased it from a pet store that im very familiar with back in november. they usually only sell at least "healthy looking" animals

Cage Info:
Cage Type - Describe your cage (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions?

screen 1.5'x1.5'x3'

Lighting - What brand, model, and types of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule?

it looks like a desert 50, i have been using this same bulb for my chams, ( besides my newborns in which i use a zoo med 5.0 bulb) one of the pet store staff talked about how old bulbs could create a light similiar to an arc flash

Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps?

right now its in the range of 75 to 80F, basks on an elevated branch
Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity?
Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind?
Placement - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor?
Location - Where are you geographically located?

Current Problem - The current problem you are concerned about.

Glad to see you are willing and able to take this on. First of all she needs a vet asap to clear up that infection. There are also some issues with the husbandry

You need to gut load the feeders with collard or turnip greens, shredded yams and carrots, some apples and oranges. Meal worms should be used as a treat.
Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule?

pretty random really, but i would say i dont dust the crickets 4 out the 7 days. never going longer than a week and a half without d3. i do dust them with regular calcium about 2 to three times a week. this info wouldnt apply to her, but i have 1 adult male and female ( the male just died yesterday from a freak accident) but they both look beautiful and very healthy, good eaters too.
this is super critical and there are dusting schedules we can review or others can suggest.

Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking?

i have a water bottle, gently mist them. she seemed very dehydrated when i gave her a drink when we got home from the vet, drinking for what seemed like an hour. unusual long drinking time.
water bottle as in a constant drip or just misting? They should have a constant drip to drink from through out the day time.
Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites?

havent seen any droppings yet, pretty sure shes never been tested
Keep an eye out for one and make sure you see white or yellow urates. Orange means dehydration. A fecal for parsites would be good.

You need a ReptiSun 5.0 tube light asap.

Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps?

right now its in the range of 75 to 80F, basks on an elevated branch

These questions are important tooHumidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity?
Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind?
Placement - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor?
Location - Where are you geographically located?

Current Problem - The current problem you are concerned about.

most of those "issues" apply to the chams i have previously before her. these chams have no issues with them today, perfectly healthy. can you be more specific?

I guess I mis-understood, I thought you were asking about help for the veiled you just rescued.

I think I get what he means: most of the questions don't apply to his care for this chameleon because he has not had her long. However, he was asked to fill out the form and so used his current procedures to give you an idea of what he normally does.

Per the form, the chameleon has been to the vet already.

Well I went back over the form and don't see the vet visit. If these are his current procedures then there are some corrections needed asap.

anyone have an answer

yes i did post that she had a vet visit yesterday, but im not seeing that it was posted on this thread. the vet said he handled chams but could offer me no help or anything with her. i suppose i need to find an expierienced vet. i am working with the pet shop staff, they said they can hook her up to an i.v. to give her anitibiotics, and said that the eye would have to be opened and drained of the infection. anyone have any experience in this?

The IV would be "my" last resort. Where are you so maybe other members can recommend a vet.

You will need a bacteria culture done of the eye, and yes it probably does need to be drained and flushes seeing how swollen it is. You really want to find an experienced vet for this, not a pet store! I lost my little female that I rescued from this same exact issue. She needs a culture and antibiotics asap! NO Iv, if anything .3cc's of lactated ringers solution daily subcutaneously. That is what I did. You have to be careful though, their subQ layer is VERY shallow and you can puncture a lung if you go too far. Right on the shoulder is a good spot, behind the casque.

If you want my advice, here it is...

First of all, kudos to you for taking in a rescue.

Second, buy some saline eye wash from the drug store (Walmart has B&L 2pk for cheap). You may need to wet a Q-tip and gently wipe away the surface gunk in the eye but once it's open, you can flush the turret gently with the saline wash. By the way, this is how my vet instructed me to do it a long time ago and it has worked wonders for infections.

Third, you need a prescription for an antibiotic. Some people use ointments like terramycin. My current vet doesn't like me using it because he said it's hard on the organs. So he choses to prescribe Ofloxacin drops. Doesn't take much. A couple drops a couple times a day and you should see improvement. You will need to wash the eye daily.

Lastly, find an exotics vet who has confidence in working with reptiles, even better if he/she has experience with chameleons. If they need guidance, there are other vets he/she can consult to get advice on how to treat your chameleon.

The abscess in the lip is not a huge deal right now compared to how the eye looks. A vet can clean out the abscess when you're ready to deal with that issue.

Best wishes to you and the veiled.

thank you, this is the advice i am looking for. one question is how much roughly do those ofloxacin drops cost? i wonder if i went back to the vet i took him too and offer him my opinion on the subject and see if he could perscribe the antibiotic. he seemed fascinated by them and i think i had more to say about there current condition than he did. that might work, but yes i definently need to find an experienced vet.

once again thanks a million

I think it's quite possible your vet will give you the antibiotic if he carries it. A tiny bottle is about $35. Not cheap for how much you get but it lasts a long time.

a little success

heres an update on my rescue veil camille (her new name not sure what it was before). i have found a vet that handles reptiles and he should be in tomorrow, hoping he will be able to drain that infection in her eye. I also went back to the vet she was at and had talked him in to prescribing her ofloxacin. i too a cu tip and soaked it in b&l fluid and wiped it around the outside of turret opening. i also gave her a couple drops in each eye.

the success i had was i had to force feed her one cricket powdered in calcium w/d3. to my surprise the next 3 powdered crickets didnt have to be forced, i simply held the crickets up to her mouth and she would bite down on them and stuff them down. her eyes are bad enough that she cant see out of them today, but yesterday she seemed to have some limited use of her eyesight. thats why i had to force her the first one. anyways all in all i'm hoping for a good recovery, i will post what happens at the vet visit tomorrow.

o also i did replace her light with a 5.0 bulb, just in case that desert uvb was causing the problem, thanx to all
