Please fill out this form. It may help us
Here is some recommended information to include when asking for help in the health clinic forum. By providing this information, you will receive more accurate and beneficial responses. It might not be necessary to answer all these questions, but the more you provide the better. Please remember that even the most knowledgeable person can only guess at what your problem may be. Only an experienced reptile veterinarian who can directly examine your animal can give a true diagnosis of your chameleon's health.

Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - The species, sex, and age of your chameleon. How long has it been in your care?
Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon?
Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? What amount? What is the schedule? How are you gut-loading your feeders?
Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule?
Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking?
Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites?
History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you.

Cage Info:
Cage Type - Describe your cage (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions?
Lighting - What brand, model, and types of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule?
Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps?
Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity?
Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind?
Placement - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor?
Location - Where are you geographically located?

Current Problem - The current problem you are concerned about.

Pictures are helpful

well i am new to this site and new to chams but i just bought 2 pymgy chams at the san deigo reptile show i thought everything was good i misted them yesterday and left for about 3 hours to go watch a movie to come home and check on them to find my male had passed so i started doing the check of what went wrong well my temp gauge was off i thought so i checked it using one of the other reptiles temp gauge the temp was almost 90f so i found the prob the humity is about 70 to 75 %so i think that is good but i have prob with the temp still i got it cooled down some but i think it is still a lil high it is around 77f i put a fan on the top to suck some of the hot air out but i dont want to keep it there because it will pull the humity out to and cause more stress on the female that is a morning tempp of 77 so as the day goes on it will get hotter any ideas on how to get it cooler without flooding her out or what should i do i know i have come to the right place for some help maythe wrong area but the right site

We really want to help, but I have to say this message is almost illegible! I know you are worried, but please use some punctuation in your messages. It is too easy to misunderstand something you write.

Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - Is to be a female breared pygmy not to sure on agebut about 1.5 in long. I have had her about a week.
Handling - just to move into new cage
Feeding - small crickets about 5-10 every 2 days. I buy them from reptile store lllreptile so i think they are gut loaded.
Supplements - using reptivitiams and mener-all with d3 switching every feeding
Watering - using spray bottle for watering. 2-3x's a day. misting until water is dripping from plants and glass of foggy, i think i have seen her drinking i also mist her head and eyes.
Fecal Description - i have not noticed any dropings and i have not had her tested for parasites.
History - wish i had some more history myself the male that i got at the smae time has died.

Cage Info:
Cage Type - using a glass 10 gal. with a bark and moss substrace.
Lighting - is repti 5.0 flouresent bulb at abotu 12 hrs daily.
Temperature - i cant seem to get this right, it is around 80F and cant get it to drop in the day night temp is around 73F until earily morning then about 68F
Humidity - seems to be around 70 -75 % created by misting.
Plants - using live palnts that i got from lllreptile store that was recomended for climbing and for humidity control.
Placement - it was in the living room next to tv but i notice it was putting off some heat so i moved it to dining room little cooler now its somewhat close to a outside door but far enough i think about 6ft and not in sunlight from the window i did put a fan on for a few min to try to cool it down but i know that that will make stress and drys out and takes the humidity away faster so not unless i have too. but it is a less traffic area it is about 4ft off the floor.
Location - geographicily well i live in San diego,Ca

Current Problem - The current problem is the temp. and i cant seem to get it cooled down enough. I am a beginnerto chams so I have many concerns over them and want to give them (her) the best that i can offer to her, I was hoping to get the chance to breed her but my male died so either i get another male after everything is good or i just keep her.

Here are a few pics

I don't know why anyone with Pygmy experience hasn't posted...I do know that I've thought about this. I also live in San Diego's east county so understand the heat issue.

Please understand that I am not offering advice or a suggestion here, I'm just offering up a thought and hoping the people here with Pygmy experience will chime in and say "oh, what a great idea" or "no, that's stupid and here's why"...

My first thought, looking at your set up, is that if you got some of that "reusable ice" stuff...you know, the plastic wrapped stuff you use in cooler for a trip to the beach...froze it and put one on top of the terrarium, it would reduce the overall temperature (cold air goes down).

That might be too much, I don't know...I do know that this summer promises to be hot and I've got "freezer bricks" in my freezer...I have a big drain pan right under the cage. If it gets too bad, I'll drop a freezer brick into the drain pan (meaning it will forevermore be sealed in plastic and labeled "LIZARD USE ONLY" ) to hopefully make the bottom of the cage more comfortable.

i havw heard of that ise pack thing but not on here, sounds good. I think that my themometer is broke going to get another this evening
i know its not 80f right now but that it is reading 80 still

A couple other ideas for you...

Yes, check the thermometer. It's always a good idea to have a backup so you can double check temps. Try a very accurate thermometer like a temp gun instead (ProExotics and LLL Reptile have them)

If you raise the UV light hood off the surface of the screen top it may help your temps. When the bulb is on the whole fixture warms up. Having even a little space (1/4" or 1/2") between the screen and the hood helps disperse it.

You can use a fan without drying the whole tank out. Put a small fan NEAR the tank so it blows across the top of the tank, not down into the tank itself. Just getting the air around the lid moving will help pull out some heat. You could put the fan on a timer so it doesn't run constantly...maybe just after the lights go off in the evening so you get a cool down.

I would just turn off the light-is there enough ambient light in the room to do that? It would be better to have no UVB then to have temps that high.

adddi did put a fan near the lid it seems cooler but the temp stil says the same. i did move the light back up off the top. there is enough light from the window so i might try that for a day or so to see and i have now moved it into the bath room. less space but humidity from shower is great and give the room a really good reason to be in there.LOL This morning temp is good at 72F and after some one (spouse) sprayed the humidity was 98% cant do it any more. but it leaving fast so hoping it will help it stay cool today.

well just got the new themometer and hygdrmeter and well my temp is around 80f in the late after noon, and humidity is great at around 75%. when a shower is on though it does rise up to around 85% or so and if i mist around this time i seen it jump to 93%. the temp jump up to 84 at this time too so i have to watch that. guess ill see how the next day goes. i put a fan in the window to pull air into and at night i know it will get alot cooler. think it is the coolest room in the house all the time.but tonight i tryed the ice packs to help give it the drop it works so i might have to do that in the day to keep it down.

Consider spraying the enclosure (not the animals) with cool or even cold water...

You can put freezer bricks in bowls of water around the enclosure.

It might sound silly, but just putting water around the enclosure (not in it) will help reduce the ambient temperature...so, if nothing else, try filling open containers with water and surrounding the environment.

Stay creative on this!!
