Help with new chameleon!!

Hey people

I just got a new veiled chameleon in yesterday. I ordered from theveiledchameleon and i just recently read a few negative posts about theveiledchameleon which is slightly unsettling. Over the phone they told me the chameleon would be 2.5 months old, but, as you might tell from the pics, i dont think he is. The chameleon is tiny, probably 1 month.

So anyway, If you take a look at the pics, you can see that he has a black spot on his stomach. Is this ok? Is it just a birthmark? And in the pics u can see that the end of his tail is black also, looks dead. Whatsup with that?

Another thing. The first pic is what he looked like yesterday. I kept his uvb light and heat bulb on all day and i came home today and hes peeling all over. I dont know if thats ok or if i should be worried. He really likes to sit right under the heat bulb.

Also, if someone can advise me on how to feed him? Ive fed him small crickets for now, dusted with Repcal Calcium vit-d3, and repcal herptivite.

Thanks in advance everyone!!!

dont send him back to that heck hole. he's shedding. he doesnt look so hot but you might be able to save him if he's eating and drinking. HE CAN MAKE IT. i would never send a cham back to its death. you didnt know about it but now you do. so just never buy their gain and do your best with that poor little baby.

He is just shedding and that is ok. When they are young they can shed every couple of weeks. The end of his tail looks as if it is an injury of some sort. It might have got closed in something. I did that once to my chameleon when he was young and it turned black like that. It also looks as if it is kinda bent or kinked though. Not sure about that black spot. Just keep an eye on it and make sure it does not spread or get larger. You should be using a plain calcium without d3 at every feeding. Use the calcium with d3 a couple of times a month and your multivitamin a couple of times a month as well. He does look awfully tiny. I don't think he is as old as they say he is.

I dont know about the place you got him from, however, the tail looks like a bruise, as does the black spot on the tummy. if thye are just bruises, then they will heal. as for the peeling. YES ITS NORMAL.
CHameleong shed! Im sorry, its funny, some dont realize they shed, but htye do, so thats what all the skin is from.

Your cham looks to be hte size mine was when i got him, and he was aged at 2 weeks by people who knew their chams.

a few negetive posts? these people are just a huge scam, see if u can get a refund and take him back asap. knowing the site he came from hell probably die in a week. the spots are NOT good btw, not sure what they are but NOT NORMAL

it could just be little burns and not fatal. or bruises. so long as they dont spred than he can get better and be ok.

I agree, I would not send him back. Shipping him again will probably kill the poor little thing. He has a shot with you and the help of this forum to lead a happy and healthy life. What kind of uvb light and basking bulb are you using. What are your temps, humidity? Can you show us a picture of your set up?

i honestly hope for the best of this situation and am sorry for what was posted. As for food options try some fuit flys, babies seem to be amazed by them.

YAY! back on track. As I stated, not trying to upset you, just dont want to see you get kicked off the forum.

i got my little guy from the same place, they said he would be 2.5 months old, so i had a whole cage set up for when he got there, expecting him to be bigger. But i got a 2 week old instead...i had to scramble to set something up, and had to go out and spend more money that i didnt really have. my guy appears to be doing fine and ive had him about a month...

I'm not going to ban you for that. However a gentle reminder to all of you (and this goes for site sponsors too) that any conflicts between individuals and businesses should be brought up here: http://www.faunaclassifieds.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=884

As for the OP's chameleon. Definitely fill out the how-to-ask-for-help form so we can get you started on a good path to proper care. I'm not sure what the black is on his side but his tail looks necrotic (dead) and will probably dry up and fall off.

i didnt say you would ban him, just that it could be done IF it continued.

Chameleon Info:

* Your Chameleon - Veiled, male, 2 weeks - 1 month im guessing.

* Handling - Only had him for two days, i understand its necessary to keep the handling to a minimum, i try to be very gentle and slow moving, and only handled him once today, am not planning on making it a daily thing.

* Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? What amount? What is the schedule? How are you gut-loading your feeders?
I just fed him crickets. I didnt gutload them. Need some advice on what to feed, how often, what i should feed the crickets, and how to keep the crickets.

* Supplements - Repcal calcium with vit D3, and Repcal Herptivite. So i should but another bucket of calcium dust?

* Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking?
I mist twice daily, around 10 am and 6 pm. and i mist enoug to make the leaves start dripping, but dont overdo. I have the misting system that came with the screameleon kit, just need to set it up correctly.

* Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites?
Never tested for parasites. Couldnt examine droppings yet. I only seen him eat 1 cricket yesterday, he didnt seem to want more but i let the crickets loose in his cage and they seem to be gone now.

* History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you.
Nope.

I bought the setup kit from screameleons.com, link: http://www.screameleons.com/setup_kit_video.htm

Reptisun 5.0 Bulb. And a daylight heat bulb.

* Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps?
Im not sure about the temperatures, but i guess its a bit warmer than the current weather temperature so about 75 degrees.

* Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity?
Habba misting system...

This is one thing id need advice with. I have a device that measures humidity, but idk how to keep humidity levels consant. Advice please. In the summer it gets very humid in NY, in the winter it gets very cold and dry. I will ofcourse maintain as close to room temperature as possible and keep the chameleon warm, but what to do about humidity?

* Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind?
Plastic.

* Placement - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor?

Current Problem - Just the black spot, the black tail end, is my setup ok? what else do i need? what to look out for? ADVICCEE!!! thanks everyone.

I really like this cute little guy, dont think i want to send him back, much rather make his life good now. I appreciate all the responses and help! And thanks for the welcome! Happy to be a fellow chameleon owner :D

Mine didnt look as bad as yours does, although yours is shedding, mine hasnt even shed yet and ive had him for a month. he just isnt a grower i guess, anyways, i just took the advice from people on here, and i have a background in reptiles, ive grown up with them so i know how to deal with sick or injured ones, just feed him fruit flies and gut loaded crix, dust them every other feeding (can a more experienced member confirm if thats good?) mist his cage 3-6 times a day, id say 5 or 6 if he is shedding now, keep the handling to a minimum, and 11 or 12 hours of uvb a day, my lights turn on at 9 and go off at 9. make sure you have a bunch of plants and vines, they like to hide, it makes them feel safe. live plants would be good, keeps the humidity up. other than that keep an eye on him and dont hesitate to post on here if you have any questions or concerns, no question is a dumb question. its better to be safe than sorry.
