Help, with advice

Sorry to make another thread of this, I just am very worried like always and want the best for my chameleons. I have 13 veiled chameleons that just hatched out this morning. So far I have put them in a cage and mist them with water. I put some pinhead crickets in the cage but I have not seen anyone eat yet. PHs stay on the ground on the paper towel. Chameleons stay up on the branches and don't want to come down. When do they usually start looking for food. None of them seem concerned about food they are all just chillin in the leaves. How should I offer the crickets? Any advice to get me through the first day would be great. This is so exciting but I am so worried and want to do everything right.

They usually don't start eating for 2 to 3 days because they are still digesting their yolk sac. I wouldn't even bother putting in crix the first day.

go to the pet store and buy the spanish moss its white baige in colour and then buy some dixie cups and cut them in half and dangle the moss into the cut dixie cup and then have it up high with your chams around a vine so the pinheads can crawl up to your babies , this way they will establish where there food comes from and befor you know it they will always be chillin around that cup waitin for you ahah but if you need anything else just ask
 
Pinheads are what you are suppose to feed them when they hatch right? The reason I ask is because they are so small compared to the space between the chameleons eyes. I feel like I should have gotten bigger crickets. Also what is good to feed PH to make them grow fast? I never raised ph, I have only had large crickets.


3 more cam out since my last post. I am up to 16. and they all look amazing. They have some cool colors. I wish I had a memory card so I can upload some pics. I am going to try and take a pic with my laptop camera, might not be good but at least I can share my excitement.

Try to track down a fruit fly culture, those little buggers are tiny, and perfect for hatchlings

edit: they also bounce around like crazy, and will really get the little guys attention when they are ready to eat.
 
You can also order house fly pupae from mantisplace.com. The variety they sell is very small and should work out good for your babies. I like to order the larvae from grubco and that way you can hatch out what you need. The larvae will keep in the fridge for a couple on months. Good luck. How many eggs did you have?
 
I had 40 total eggs. So far 18 are out. 1 more since last post!!. They all look like they are coming out today. 22 more to go.
 
Must be exciting!! Id love to breed mine if I had the space. I have one full room dedicated to chameleons and it's still not enough. Good luck and keep us posted. David
 
we are up to 19. Three more look like they are about to come out within the next 2 hours. All of them have collapsed except for 3 of them. The 3 look like the will collapse either tonight or in the morning. They all look healthy.

Some of them are really dark brown to black. Only like two, and they change there color back to green sometimes, but I often see them dark. Is that a bad sign for that guy? I have the uvb on them and that is it. How long should the uvb be on for hatchlings? A full 12 hours or what? Thanks for all the help in advance.

Up to 33 now. 7 more to go. Anyone have any advice what I should do about feeding them.


I have pinhead crickets for them that to me look way to small for them to even eat. They hatched yesterday, when should I start worrying about them eating? I think monday I will order 1000 1/4" crickets for them. I really need some advice or something to stop me from worrying so much.
 
I wouldn't worry yet.
They will eat. The one in the picture looks big and healthy!
How are you going to house them all?
You will need to order more crickets soon anyway ..you're going to go through 1000's* !!!

I already ordered 5,000 pinheads that came yesterday. I need them to grow up faster. The chameleons are huge though, a 9 month incubation time did them good. We are up to 35 now.

Housing- Right now I have three cages for them (1 glass, 2 rubbermaid bins). Separating them into the different cages as they come out. Plenty of sticks for climbing and fake vines for them to hide in. I have the UVB light on top that I let stay on for 12 hours a day. I have not really seen them drinking, although I don't constantly watch them after I spray them. I spray them 3-5 times a day. I wait until the hole cage dries and then mist them again. All still look great. I just can't wait to get through the first week. I need to think of how to offer the pinheads so they will be able to get the easy. From head to tip of tail they are about 1.5 inches long, some are a little bit bigger (almost 2 inches). The space between there eyes is about 1/4" (probably a little bit bigger, that is just a guess).

I think it sounds like you are doing great!
You worry too much (have I told you that before?) ... of course this is easy for me to say, as I have no babies in the house right now.:rolleyes:

Everything is fine ... you'll be reporting to us soon about them eating.
You may have to separate them into smaller groups though, to make sure everyone is getting a fair shot at the food.

How many can be housed together to make sure they are all getting enough food?
 
Your going to need fruit flies to get them started they have to learn to hunt then they can move up to pinheads. keep them in a small enclosure so they can find food easily they are poor hunters at first.
