HELP! Why is my baby not eating?

Chameleon Info:
• Your Chameleon – Sambava Panther, I’ve had him about 2 weeks from Kammers so should be close to 4 months now.
• Handling – Twice last week, left alone the rest of the time.
• Feeding – Offer him about 10 small crickets, 2 butterworms and 2 hornworms. Gutload crickets with cricket crack, strawberries, carrots, and collard greens.
• Supplements – Reptivite w/o D3 every feeding, switch between D3 and multivitamin every other Friday.
• Watering – Mist 3 times a day and constant dripper, does drink regularly.
• Fecal Description – Black poop with white urate every time.
• History – Got him from Kammers about 2 weeks ago at 3.5 months old.

Cage Info:
• Cage Type – 18x18x36 screen cage
• Lighting – 5.0 reptisun 15 inch and 40 watt household bulb from 7:40 am-8:20 pm.
• Temperature – Highest point in basking spot is 84-85, bottom of cage is 70. Thermometer reading
• Humidity – Top of cage is about 55%, bottom is 65-70%.
• Plants – Pothos and mass cane, orchid in the bottom corner.
• Placement – Relatively high traffic area next to bathroom, but I have put a sheet across front of cage so he can’t see out, cage is about 5 feet high.
• Location – Tallahassee, Fl.

Current Problem – Has not been eating as much as expected, maybe 5-6 small crickets a day. I usually put 2-4 butter and horn worms in to try and stimulate him to eat, which he does so, but he rarely goes to the feeding cup were the crickets are and its below his basking area, so he can definitely see it and has eaten from there before. I also put some crickets on the screen and he will slowly eat them, but after about 2 or 3 he gets scared of me and hides, so I leave him alone to see if he goes to the cup but at the end of the night, there are still about 5 crickets left. I’m worried he is not eating enough and wont grow correctly, I have seen him drink water and poop regularly though and his eyes and mouth look healthy. I do notice he stays in his basking spot much more than my other cham and stays a dark color most of the time, and won't leave it until i mist the cage or later towards evening. Please any help or advice is appreciated, thanks.

As long as he is eating and pooping he should be fine.. when my chameleons are sick or way too stressed they stop eating.. see if he is shedding too.. he just might not have a big appetite yet. Maybe he is still acclimating to your habitat. But the big thing is he IS eating.

oh and... try some different food too.. one of my females is picky and only will eat super worms and crickets period. i have tried many things and she just sticks to those two. hope this helps. Its always stressful trying to get used to a new cham!

thanks for the advice a2z, right now im offering him crickets, butterworms, and hornworms and he seems to like all of them, but what worries me is that he just doesn't eat from the cup inside the cage and he won't eat from my hand. Oh well, i'll just have to wait it out then lol, I was thinking that he can be heading towards a shed and his appetite decreased for now

the butterworms and hornworms probably taste better than the crickets! What size crickets are you feeding? If they are larger ones, he is gonna eat less. I would go with 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch and see if he doesn't like smaller ones if you are feeding larger than that. Try just feeding cricks and no worms. i would not cover the front of the cage. Let him get used to you. He will eventually! Let him adapt to the environment. I have my chameleon in the same room with my cockatiel and right next to my computer and he sits there and watches me type. The bird does not bother him in the LEAST. they adapt! Sometimes we coddle too much!~

Thats the hardest part of this whole hobby.... waiting. waiting for results, eggs, colors haha everything. Is he really skinny? In the picture he looks really healthy to me.

you should dust with calcium at ever feeding with out d3 reptive is vitamins that you should only do once a week with the calcium with d3 but if your like our florida owners that keep them out in the sun alot you can keep away with the d3 cause they are getting all the d3 they need from the sun. what size is the cage? I tried cup feeding my little ones but they prefer to hunt so i got rid of the cup plus this will help with their hunting skills. If you feed them hornworms at this age it can be a bad thing my bigger guys when i feed them thats all they want and then they won't eat anything else so i gotta do the mean thing and starve them they have food but i don't feed them anything else until they start eating crickets again. best of luck keep us informed

^Allen, I do dust calcium w/o D3 at every feeding, and D3/multivitamin about twice a month. I'm moving into a new house soon with a bigger back yard so I'll be able to take him outside a lot more. Hmm that does make sense about the worms tasting better than the crickets so maybe he's just looking for worms, I will hold off on the worms for a while then and see if it improves

The pet store i buy from only has small and large crickets, so i get the small ones and they range from 1/4 to a little bigger. I hope he's just heading towards a shed soon.

I hear ya on the worms. Once I started mine on those he would have nothing to do with crickets! Lately he is being picky about eating eVERYTHING! Driving me crazy!!!!!

Hahah its amazing how we start to care more about their well being then ours! What worms did you feed him when on the cricket strike? I've read on here that only worms are unhealthy

Yeah, sounds like your guy is just not a big eater........maybe just taking a long time to properly settle in.......mealworms are low in calcium, and too many can cause impaction. Waxworms are too fatty to give often. Calciworms or silkworms can be used as staples though.....

silks are good and one of the low fat worms. Alot of the worms are fatty. At the moment I cannot get mine to east silks either. I feed supers, and some moths. Supers are high in fat though.

johh in your previous post you said reptivite i have reptivite but thats vitamins so thats what i'm assuming. yeah i'd just suggest to lay off the horn worms for now till he is a little older and give them as treats every now and then. I also use silkworms for my babies for their evening or should i say there 3ish snack.

Matt, many people don't ever see their chameleons drink and some don't see them eat (my current two are stealth eaters...if they know I'm in the room they just play statue). Don't worry about the input. Your concern is the output. Monitor that and if it's good, then know that eating and drinking are happening.

haha yea sorry, I looked at the supps again and i meant rep-cal for the calcium, I use repto-life as my multi. And the names Matt btw :D

He actually ate all his crickets this morning (of course this would happen as soon as i post this thread lol) so I was definitely happy to see that, I guess he is still getting use to his new home and it'll just be a matter of time before he becomes comfortable
