help please

hi,i have a veiled chameleon,about 2 month old,i dont know how to tell which sex it is,and he/she has got an eye that is shut quite alot,ive cleaned it but dont know if im doing good or bad,its eating well and drinking well,also,how many crickets would you feed a chameleon of this age,thanks for any advise

Welcome to the forums. How often are you misting? Some long warm mistings might help the eye. If it doesn't show improvement in a day or two I would see the chameleon vet.

To tell the male from the female you look at the heels on the back feet. The male will have a little bump called a spur.

A two month old should eat quite a few small feeders....15 to 18 per day.

thankyou,the additional info is very helpful indeed,i cannot see a spur so its a she...iam using a repti glo 5.0,is this as good as the reptisun 5.0 you mentioned,and a sun glo 50 watts basking light,en i leave those on most of the day,is this necessary,sorry about all the questions but you get all the wrong answers and products from the average pet store

Reptiglo is a OK alternative to reptisun but reptisun is always better.
Is the reptiglo a coiled bulb or a linear tube?
Also you need to keep the lights on a 12/12 hour schedual.

For example you tuurn the lights on at 9am turn them off at 9pm

people preffer the reptisun but the reptiglo wil also work i use these as i cant get reptisun in my area and ive neva had problems with them
as for your lights they shud be 12hours on 12 hours off say 8 till 8 or 7 till 7 this can be easily done buy using a timer so you no he/she is get enough light and uv

thanks every1,the reptiglo is a coiled one and in a exo terra casing,by the way,iam building a screen vivarium at the moment,en my cham is about 2-3 month old,wen would be the best time to swap him from the smaller cage to the bigger one

The coiled bulb is prolly why your cham is closing her eyes.
You need to take that out and buy the long tube kind and use that instead.

I also used a coiled reptiglo when Pedro was a baby and it hurt his eyes and his eyes were also doing the same exact thing.

Just take it out for now and get a reptiglo 5.0 LINEAR TUBE ASAP like today or tomorrow

ok cheers Ashley,dont take this the wrong way my friend but as you can imagine ive taken alot advice from so-called pet shops and spent a fortune in 3 weeks en just wanted to ask other people if they would take your advice on the lights,because im not fanceing spending another fortune,but ive turned it off,her eye does open occasionally wen shes catching crickets

Hi there & welcome, I would suggest you look at the bulb to see when is was made and ask on the forum if it is one of the new ones consider ok. Most of us do use the long tube one as there have been issues of the coil type effecting a chameleon eyes. Several of our members know how to tell what model you have in a bulb. If you want to be really safe, you might want to invest in the long tube style.

Doesn't it amaze you that we all start out thinking the chameleon is the pricey part of this hobby then you get to buy the supplies? I spend a ton on supplies and feeders compared to what I spend on most of my chameleons - but I do have a couple of chameleons that are working on breading the bank.

After several months of reading the general here at CFs is that the some (but not all) of the compact/coiled flouros can & will cause eye damage & possibly death. Almost everyone here uses the linear (long & straight) 5.0 flourescents. Repti-Sun seems to be the most popular as their test results have been the best for your cham.

hi,its an exoterra reptiglo 5.0,13 watts made in china,i estimate ive spent £450 in 3 weeks from when i got Kojack,i'll try en take the old bulb back en swap it for the other,can i say thankyou to Ashley for the advice and you for the recommendation

Mhmm no prob.
Her eye might just be irrated IF its the bulb just mist her with warm water and maybe it MIGHT go away.
When this happened to pedro after a couple days with the linear tube in his eyes cleared up perfectly fine

If she keeps doing it and it doesnt stop after 2-3 days Id take her to the vet to get something to help her.

ive got the linear bulb now but i couldnt get the repti sun,so i got the repti-glo 5.0,so fingers crossed,thanks
