Ok I so I came home from work and went to check on my Cham and he was sleeping six inches from the bottom all fine and dandy. I opened up his enclosure to spray and I bumped the vine he was in he woke up looked at me went to move and fell a couple inches caught himself puffed up real big then fell again continued to puff up and hiss at me. I left him be for a second he settled down. He started climbing the side as soon as I moved he puffed up again fell on his side from about two inches up stayed on his side and hissed at me. Is this some sort of defense mecenisum, or is something wrong with him?

First, if he was asleep his brain was "cooled down", so his reactions might be sort of delayed or not totally coordinated. Think of yourself being woken up suddenly (except that you have a stable body temp and a cham doesn't). Many chams will let themselves fall off a perch if something disturbs them while asleep and they also instinctively puff up with air to cushion a long fall from a tree. It's partly defensive and partly to fool the intruder into thinking they are leaves, not dinner. He sounds fine if a bit pissed off.

Okay thank you for replying so fast I was afraid there was something wrong. I figured it was something to do with a defence type thing but I'm new to Cham's and was unsure and really just hoping he was all right. It makes sense that they would do those things to protect themselves and to fool predators.

i missed this, 530 is not too far off, i have a cham that goes to bed and gets up with the sun with or without lights on/off. and thats about a 6pm bedtime where i live now. so maybe he had an exciting day and was just tired.

Mine all usually start heading for their pillows about 5, lights out at 6, maybe he was doing the same. I would just keep an eye on him, not run to the vet just yet. If he is eating, drinking, pooping etc. It might have been as Dekuscrub said, woke up a little startled
