Hey guys! I’m an owner of a male panther chameleon but today I ended up getting a veiled chameleon. Only thing is is I’m not sure if it’s a male or a female. I’m leaning more towards female being I don’t see a tarsal spur on the back feet. Can any of you experts help me?

Also note when I got “her or him” they were black with yellow spots. And on a different forum on here that’s saying she could be carrying eggs

That looks like a male to me whom is extremely malnourished and probably dehydrated.
The high casque looks male to me as well. I guess I would be surprised, if it was a female, that it would producing eggs right now. I’m not sure their current state of health would allow much egg production

Yes, that also is what I was thinking period that doesn't even surprise me period there was no u v bee bulb in the enclosure, and there was also another.Sold chameleon in there or I would have saved him too period my heart was broke. And I just had to help him period I obviously have his heat bulb and his u.V b bulb and real plants in there with him right now.I also just dusted his crickets and put them in there. He hasn't been black since I got him. (4 hours now)

I hope you are able to turn their life around. They have a long road ahead to getting healthy again. Work on hydration too. They are likely pretty dehydrated as well as malnourished.

I just missed it.His enclosure right after I read what you said period would you suggest me missing more than twice a day?

Poor guy really does look dehydrated. Good on you for rescuing him, Kayla. It’s crazy how many are kept without proper UVB or hydration setups. I had a veiled years ago that bounced back fast once I started regular misting and added a dripper — he used to sit right under it every morning. You’ll probably start seeing better color soon if he’s drinking and eating again.

DO NOT intermingle anything between the two chams. I would not even have them in the same room. This boy is really bad off. Could be simple malnutrition and bad husbandry but he could have a parasite load. So you want to keep them separate so you can not cross contaminate and this includes washing hands.

You will not follow standard feeding reduction for this boy. You want to give him the opportunity to eat every single day until his weight is where it needs to be. And I would get a fecal sample tested to ensure he is not carrying a parasite load.

You could give him insects like wax worms, horn worms along with crickets, hoppers etc because they should help with the hydration.

Running a dropper might encourage more drinking for now too.

What colour are the urates?
I just got him not even twenty four hours ago period I literally couldn't see him sit in the enclosure.I saw him in any longer. It was so bad period he is drinking when I missed but I did dust some crickets last night and put them in there and it doesn't seem to me like he has eaten them yet period i'm going to go by the store today. And get some hornworms, and hopefully he will eat them period there has not been a poop yet.So I haven't been able to see the urate. Poor thing. This morning, when I missed, it was just drinking off the leaf. It's breaking my heart

Thank you so much period I know. It's so rare to see a chameleon drink. And he was drinking this morning when I was misting it. I will say he has not eaten yet though, but he has not been that crazy black that I saw him stressed out since I got him. Only been less than 24 hours

Also thank you everyone for your help. I love this chameleon community because everyone is always so kind and helpful. Some really cool people on this website.

Any idea on how old he may be by the pictures? I'm thinking he is a juvenile

Looks full grown. So could be any age past 9 months.

And as others stated. Keep him hydrated. Feed once a day. Id clean up poop very quickly, at least daily. You hope he was just neglected and parasite free. But certain parasites are a pain to remove once introduced, and most are spread via poop.

I still haven't seen any poop and it seems to me.He still hasn't eaten any of his food but I have seen him drinking, and he is climbing around the enclosure pretty good and his tail is still curling, which is a good sign

If water is what he wants, give him water. Being active is not a bad sign. Keep it up. We are all pulling for him

What has been added about the potential for bad pathogens making him sicker is also great advice to be very careful about possibly cross contamination to your panther. His overall state of health makes him really vulnerable right now to disease in general
