Help help help

They do regurgatate food when they know they will not be able to digest it. Could be from stress, dehydration, or if he did not raise his body temp enough to digest.

I'm sorry. I thought you were just feeding bug juice.

I was did that some but the last couple days was trying to get some whole food to not have to worry about him choking on liquids so much. Back to bug juice today. He didn't take a whole lot this morning. Only about 1-1.5ml of juice.

The morning is the worst he ha looked since the day we first took him to the vet. His eyes look more sunk then they were yesterday and he got a fluid shot while at te get yesterday.

His color is paler then it has been all week.

Yesterday when I saw his mouth open it looked pasty. There was saliva strings strung from top jaw to bottom. I saw the strings again this morning once before I started giving him juice.
This is a ahot of his mouth after feeding. He was very reluctant today. I couldn't get him to take to much. At the point of the photo he just would close his mouth and hissed whenever I got near.

He seems really week and isn't doing well today. Very scary. We don't even get the test results back until tomorrow or the next day and the way he is now we are worried he is going to die today.

He did just wake up but he is keeping his eyes shut more then he has been any other morning during feeding this week.

Oh, poor baby...he does not look good. The strings are suggestive of a respiratory infection. Hopefully someone with experience will come in with a suggestion.

If he hs an RI how contagious is that? Does it need direct contact to transfer or can just be in the same room affect other? This is the only chameleon I have but I got other reptiles in the same room as him.

I don't know...but I just read this: http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=PRINT&A=1359

Choking or gagging on a piece of food or foreign object may result in temporary excess saliva. Being handled too soon after eating or drinking may result in water being regurgitated and spit out; since it is now mixed with saliva, it will be rather viscous rather than thin like plain water. If it's too soon after eating, some food may be partially regurgitated and stuck in the throat, which may cause increased salivation. No other signs of RTI occur in these instances, so they are easily told apart from an RTI.

Maybe it's not related to an RI at all....Hopefully your vet can clear things up.

I am sure this has been asked already but what is your humidity at from the hottest spot to the coolest? What type of hygrometer are you using, dial/digital?

I am just checking to make sure you really have the humidity levels you think you have. He could be drying out since you have been covering every other possible cause.

You can test/calibrate your hygrometers via the steps in this link.

I just hope he comes around, he is looking worse and worse though and i fear the worse.

I missed a bunch of updates it seems. I'm glad he was able to pass a pretty normal bowel movement. Dehydration can cause trouble defecating so maybe that was all it was (hopefully). Strings of saliva can also be dehydration. But based on those pictures poor guy really does not look good at all. :( When I first saw them I thought you were going to say that he had passed. I hope he pulls through, but he looks like he's only barely hanging on right now...let us know how he does. You are doing a wonderful job supporting him and giving him the very best chance that he could get. I commend you for all your hard work and efforts to support him, and I hope it pays off!

Question

Have you been putting juice in his mouth in large amounts? He could be choking on the water or juice if you aren't giving him it properly and in to large an amount. They can only safely take a few drops at a time.

I know there are others who have more info on how to rehydrate chameleons properly but if you are using a syringe to water him then you need to be careful with it.

Oh no! I was afraid of that. I'm so sorry for your loss. You truly gave him excellent care and went above and beyond to get him the help he needed. It sounds like he came with too many problems from his previous owner and was just beyond help sadly. He had the very best chance with you though. My most sincere condolences for your loss. :(

I should still get the blood work results back today or tomorrow. as of last night when i picked him up the tests were currently being run. I will post what it was when i get the results. If I dont hear anything today I will call them tomorrow.
