I cant get my 3 month old panther to drink. I mist 3 times a day, use icecubes and a dripper for a few hours as well. Hes still eating but he took a big orange poop today for the first time! Yesterday it was normal(black& all white). HIs eyes arnt as plump as normal as well. How long should I wait tell I should start really worring and what to do? Thank you all so much!

oh and one more thing. I just put him in a new cage as well so that makes me all the more worried that he will comtinue to get worse because hes stressed about the move. If I would have known he was dehydrated I wouldnt have moved him yet...

take him into the shower with a plant he can climb on. aim the showerhead on the wall so the droplet turn into mist and hit the plant. watch him in there for about 30 min and he should feel better. make sure the water is warm but not too hot for him.

he isn't going to drink in front of you every single day. best thing you could do is let him relax and adjust to his home. my guy only actually drinks in front of me every few days or so. don't stress him out by throwing him in the shower in many cases handling and change of environment can stress him out.

if he really isn't drinking what i do is get my mister and fill it with hot water, not burning but hot, then when you mist it comes out like a very warm mist and my cham almost always starts drinking.

good luck :)

oh and i forgot, it is better to mist him in his cage with the warm water rather than moving to the shower because he is comfortable in his cage

Ice cubes will be providing water that is very cold for the chameleon...it would be better not to use them IMHO.

Is your chameleon behaving normally other than possibly not being hydrated well enough? Awake all day? Moving around the cage?

oh boy he didnt like the shower at ALL! He was pissed! But thank you for the sugestions. I always mist him with warm water. I know I wont see him drink vary often but I have yet to see him drink at all and Iv had him for almost 3 weeks. I havent been worried cause his poop has looked fine so i figgured he was drinking at some point. Will wax worms help with his hydration at all. Iv noticed there really juicey. like i said he still is eating. Once again thank you all!!

for the frist part of the day (8 to 2) He seems to just sit in the same spot, he'll get up and move around and eat a cricket or two but for the most part he dose nothing. Later in the evening he seems to be really active thow. Hes 3 months old. He eats about 15 crickets a day at least. I feed him a good diet i think. I fully gut load. I feed him crickets for 4 days, then give him mealworms fro a day. Then 4 days of crickets aging then 5 wax worms & a few crickets, always repeating the cycle. I always dust the crickets as well.

chams can absorb water through their food, their eyes, and sometimes they may just feel more comfortable drinking when you are not around. post some pictures and everyone can check out to see how he looks.

he does sound healthy by what you have said though

djfishygillz said..."chams can absorb water through their food, their eyes"...I'd be interested in reading about this.....do you have a site with information about absorbing water through their eyes?

Graham, if his urates are white then he's probably hydrated. Sunken eyes don't necessarily mean dehydration. Eyes are sort of the chameleon "tell all"....lots of stuff shows up first as sunken eyes. I would suggest you complete the "how to ask for help" form so the more experienced keepers can offer you help.
