Help Charlie has a problem!

Hi All, I have a female veiled she is thought to be around 8-9 months in age as a maximum. I have filled in details below to ask for your help.

This is the problem: She started around two weeks ago hanging upside down, sleeping upside down which was abnormal. But she was still eating drinking basking etc which we thought was good.

Int he last 4 or 5 days she has stopped hanging upside down and is now lethargic, spending most of her time at the bottom of the cage, is brown with yellow spots most of the time. She hasn't eaten the crickets in the enclosure for the last 3 days. She is very bloated and plump and when she breaths out deeply there are bobbly ridges down her on one side which I have never noticed before. She doesn't seem to be getting better. We have googled and googled but we cant decide whats wrong with her as the advice on the net is too sparce and case specific. She keeps using her back feet to almost "pinch" her back end and she will not climb. She also puts up no resistance when you try to remove her from the cage which is not normal she usually does her very best to bite your hand off when it comes in the cage.

We have provided a 7/8 inch bowl of damp sand which we have dug a small hole in and then we have made it private by surrounding with plants in the hope that she will lay a clutch and be fine soon.

We have also when cleaning her today given her a bath in warm water with reptiboost mixed in to try and re-hydrate and make her feel better. We hand fed her some waxworks and mealworms (one of which she regurgated and spat out shortly after)

PLEASE HELP! We can take her to the vet Tuesday if necessary.

Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - Veiled, 8-9 months max, female, in our care around 4 months

Handling - Virtually never, maybe just to hand feed some mealworms after a full cage clean

Feeding - Gut loaded crickets mostly, with mealworms & waxworms once a week or so.

Supplements - Vetark Calcium one or two pinches straight into the store container that the crickets come in and shake it up

Watering - A spray bottle for about 60+ seconds twice a day or if I know I am not going to be home until after lights out that day I will spray extra in the morning

Fecal Description - Until now, there was fairly dry droppings on branches bottom of cage and yellow/white patches here and there.

History - She started hanging upside down a week or so ago but was still eating and drinking and climbing

Cage Info:
Cage Type - Reptibreeze Large mesh cage, I think its 45w x 45d x 90h, no substrate just newspaper or sometime repticarpet if I see any in pets at home because I thought she might accidentally swallow bark or something like that

Lighting - ExoTerra 100w Spot Lamp, Arcadia 6% UVB Tube Lamp 12"

Temperature - 22 deg at bottom 31 deg at basking spot which is 6 inches from top of cage, I have never measured overnight temp. I use a TN1 laser/infrared spot thermometer gun to measure temps

Humidity - I don't know what my humidity levels are, I just mist twice a day

Plants - Silk plants only

Placement - Cage is in my home office, least used room in the house as advised by where we purchase her from, cage height at basing spot would be about 5ft or so. It's than anyone using the computer in the office higher

Location - We are located in the UK, Bedfordshire

Could you post pictures? Is she rounded out? Looks like she ate a bag of marbles?

Erm.. well she has gone to sleep now, lights are out now it 7pm UK time (I usually light 7-7) She does kind of look like "she has swallowed a bag of marbles" not very distinctly though. She is very round and occasionally she will take a deep breath and go very flat and wide then back to normal.

I will add pictures in the morning when we try to feed her some more mealworms

Alright you do have a laying bin, it might be a bit small at 7/8 of an inch unless you meant 7-8 inchs which still is a tad small. Jann posted a link to her blog, it is a fantastic source of info on it.

I hope these photos help, shes a bit sandy because I had put her in the laying bin. She isn't really standing on her legs very much

Extra info

Also she doesn't seem to want to move from the location she is put in, i.e you put her in the laying bin and she will just stay there or maybe shuffle around a bit in the bin, laying on her belly.

When you feel down her sides it does feel very bumpy

Well the bin has only been in there since about 5 today so thats only a couple of hours before she went to sleep. I will make a point of only going in tomorrow to give her a good misting then ill leave her with the room door shut all day to hopefully do her thing!!!

I think you're passed that point already. Its time to take her to a vet.

Our local exotic vet is opne tomorrow until 12 so I will take her first thing for emergency clinic.

Got a vets appointment for 10.30, its 47 quid just for a consultation. I hope that the treatments are not as expensive as the consult or I won't be able to afford it!

Result of vets visit

We have been to the vet, they think she is eggbound as well. They suggested nursing with injections for extra liquids, calcium and pain relief. Then monitoring and then surgery to remove the eggs.

Unfortunately we have been priced out of the surgery option, it would have been almost £300 in total.

We had all the injections and have now bought her home and put her in the laying bin and we will leave her in peace until near lights out when we will give her some more reptiboost solution and hand feed some mealworms etc.

Then it's just a matter of time and luck!

Glad to hear yah got her to the vet! Hopefully it doesn't get to the point of surgery but in the end as long as she is happy and healthy that is all that matters. Keep us posted on how she is doing and let us know what happens in the end!

She really doesn't look like she has the energy to dig a tunnel and lay eggs? She looks very much like she wants to lay their and die. She will not climb, she just sits there looking sorry for herself! I have started the tunnel for her by making a little hole to about 1/2 way down the bin.

I made it full depth but as soon as I put her in the bin she fell down the hole nose first and couldn't get out. She is now just sat in the new 1/2 depth hole looking at me.

She has been alone all day since the vet visit this morning she hasn't budged and inch. I would confidently say she is unable to climb anywhere.I don't think she will make it...

Charlie passed away :(

Sadly Charlie passed away this weekend. We made her laying bin super big and deep, tried sand & soil, blocked off her view with a sheet around her enclosure, lowered temps, raised temps etc etc.

We kept giving her water by hand once a day and tried to encourage her to eat etc

I don't think this is the end for us keeping chameleons, I think we cared well for Charlie it was just our stupid mistake that we trusted the pet shop on her age and laying bin advice, they told us we should start providing her with a laying bin in 6 months time (which would have been Feb 2011).

We will get another veiled, definitely a male this time and make a few additions to our husbandry which although we did this stuff it could have been improved:

- Better gut loading
- More frequent supplementing
- Add a big dripper as well as misting

If anyone has any suggestion about changes we could make to make sure we get it perfect please comment...
