Hello , I have a Jackson's chameleon and I recently moved him to a reptibreeze cage. But ever since I moved him he's been acting weird. Hasn't really been eating always in the same spot doesn't move. Just lays there with his head down. If anyone has some input on this it would really be helpful. I would greatly appreciate it.

Just lays there with his head down,I also caught him sleeping during the day which I know that's bad. If anyone has some input on this it would really be helpful. I would greatly appreciate it.



Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - Jackson's chameleon, male, about 4-5 months old. How long has it been in your care? A little over a month
Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon? I don't handle him hardly ever.
Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? I feed him crickets and roaches.

What amount? What is the schedule? About 10 crickets a day and 4 roaches a week. How are you gut-loading your feeders? I don't really gut load, but I do have some in a bin with potatoes and slices of apples with lettuce.

Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule? I've been using ) phosphorous free calcium with out D3; dust feeders daily

Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking? I have a automatic exo terra monsoon mister, he gets misted 3 times a day for about 10 seconds each sessions.I do see him drinking water.

Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. His droppings have been normal. Brown at the bottom and white on top, looks normal.

Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites? The place I bought him said he just got tested.

History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you.(no extra info)

Cage Info:
Cage Type - Describe your cage (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions? I have a screen cage 18*18*36

Lighting - What brand, model, and types of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule? Exo terra combination light. One side the UVB light the other side a 60 watt bulb.

Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Temp 70-75 during the day.Lowest overnight temp? 55-60 at night.How do you measure these temps? I have a tempeture gage inside the cage.

Humidity - What are your humidity levels? Humidity level is at 60-75.How are you creating and maintaining these levels? I put plastic on two sides of the cage.

What do you use to measure humidity? I have a humidity gage in the cage as well.
Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind? Yes live plants they are called draceanas.
Placement - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high cage is located in my living room because thats the warmest part of my house.traffic areas?no traffic areas. He's at the way back

At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor? About 3 feet from the floor.
Location - Where are you geographically located?im located in Colorado Springs Colorado.

the things im noticing are this, keep in mind i am not an experienced jacksons keeper and am only stating my opinion based off of what i read on the jacksons caresheet which i will also link for you https://www.chameleonforums.com/care/caresheets/jacksons/

it seems to me you may need to mist for longer in order to allow him more of a chance to drink. he may not have enough of a chance if you are only misting for 10 seconds and have no misting system or dripper

i think you may be over supplementing him. jacksons need less supplements then other chams. according to the caresheet i linked above, they need calcium without d3 twice a week, a multivitamin once a month, and a calcium with d3 once a month. i would adjust your schedule to this.

i also think you need to start gutloading your feeders differently. what you are currently gutloading them with isnt providing as much nutrition as other things will. this blog has a great gutload recipe for your feeders that will give your cham a ton of nutrition. https://www.chameleonforums.com/blogs/sandrachameleon/75-feeder-nutrition-gutloading.html

as for him hiding, it is most likely because he just got put into a new enviroment and needs time to adjust to it. it oftentimes takes them up to a week or a little longer to adjust and settle in :) continue to offer food and keep an eye on him and please keep us posted!!! i think adjusting the things i mentioned above will also help him, but that is my opinion based on what i read in the jacksons caresheet. :)
 
I do have a dripping system as well forgot to put it in the sheet. I'll give him time to adjust will definitely keep you guys posted.

I keep veileds but what Reptilove advised sounds pretty good to me according to what I've learned and read. I know Jackson's have lower temps as they are mountain creatures, and are supplemented less than veileds. I agree your gut loading leaves a lot to be desired, but that can be improved easily enough. You need to give oranges, cilantro, apple; lots of simple fruits and veg that you probably have in your fridge right now and as easy to cut up as the potatoes, lettuce and apples you currently give. By the look of him he looks very underfed - his ribs are easily seen without him pulling in a breathe and he looks a bit dehydrated. His eyes look a bit sunken to me.

How old is your UVB light? And you really need to give him some calcium with D3.

My UVB light is about a month old, I do give him calcium with d3. Ive been trying to feed him everyday but he just wont . You think it's because he might be adjusting to his new cage.

this is from the caresheet for jacksons in the chameleon care resources, as ChameleonMom said its important to get some calcium with d3 if you dont have it for once a month use. been researching them alot because im thinking about getting one!!! :)

Supplementation:
Calcium and other vitamins are very important to your chameleon's health. Feeder insects should be lightly dusted with powdered supplement before being fed to your chameleon. As a montane species (native to higher altitudes) Jackson's have decreased supplementation requirements compared to tropical species due to metabolism differences. Use calcium (without D3 or phosphorus) twice a week, a multivitamin once a month, and calcium with D3 once a month.

in the help form you filled out it said you had calcium without d3 or phosphorus, do you have both one with d3 and one without d3? if you dont have one with d3 in it or a multivitamin a good place to order them is any of the site sponsors, you can find them in the uper right hand corner of this screen :)
 
Sorry i do have it with d3. I also tried feeding him with a cup in his cage so I know how much he's been eating. And I think he doesn't like that, so i tried to hand feed him and he will take once in a while. So I put crickets in his cage and just wait to see if he eats. Any ideas of how I should try to feed him.
 
I used a white cup mounted on a branch, he just looked at them. But I will try plastic sprite bottle. Thanks for all the info and your very knowledgeable , your awesome.
 
he may not have liked the white cup, they can be really picky! i used a white cup for cup feeding and my veiled wouldnt eat out of it. then i changed it to a purple ceramic bowl i made and he happily ate out of it, it was strange.

you're welcome! i help with what i can, im still learning too im pretty new to chameleons but have learned a lot here on the forum and have been able to help others too :)

let us know how the sprite bottle works out and how he adjusts to the new cage! hopefully he'll finish settling in soon.
 
Hello,so I took my Cham Pedro to the vet and I have to feed him with a syringe and its very difficult to open his mouth. Does anyone have any ideas on how to open his mouth. I've tried the credit card and he just won't open. Can anyone please help me.

i have never had to do this so i personally cant help, i would post a new thread titled "Syringe feeding tips" you will get a lot of help that way!!

im sorry you have to do that, but im glad that you took him to the vet! i hope for a speedy recovery for Pedro!!

I have a pair of Jacksons, the same size cage and I use a live umbrella plant, lots of leaves and branches and some fake jungle vines throughout the cage so that they can move up and down around and in the through the plant. I also use the monsoon mister with a mistking rain dome fixture and I place it right on top of the cage, dead center of the plant so that the mist falls onto the cage and drops down like rain onto the whole plant and I always see them going up to the plant and drinking directly from the leaves. I programmed it so that the mister runs every 3 hours for 2 minutes so they get a good amount of water(so does the plant).
