Has it always been about panthers?

Hi, this community is about chameleons in general. Panthers and veileds are hands down the most popular. With that you will see more threads and post's about these two more than any other. They arent the most sought after because they are ugly or not cool looking ;)

Rarer species are truly for the enthusiast. Most are wild caught and need expert type care to thrive. Not all breed readily in captivity and even with successful breeding. Some of these rarer species sale/slowly. Making it hard for the breeder to keep producing animals.

I think they are all cool but harder to look after or hard to get hold of on the south coast of england

I have a veiled Cham and even though it isn't my favourite of the Cham species, I love my little man to pieces. The reason I settled for him is purely because I have not had a pet Cham before (I have many other reptiles, but none chams) and as Veileds are hardier and the "easier" of the chams I thought it would be a good starting point for me, I am however hoping to build up to a Mellers As I love their detailing. So to sum up, no its not all about panthers, but it is about what is best for the chams IMHO.

i am pretty new to chams, started with veiled because i liked the
high casque on the male in the shop i bought from. this shop has
a good rep and they gave me good reasons that veiled in the desert made sense as a starting point.
i see why panthers get a lot of attention, very pretty!
my next cham is a jackson i have coming this week, just would rather
look at the pretty panthers on the web but like the unusual appearance of horns and casques myself.

i have learned a lot about other chams reading here tho!

I agree with you showjet I think people need to move out of "norm" and into something unique and different!

I think people need to buy what THEY want after careful research and proper setup. People will do what they want. Just my two cents. By the way, I have a Nosy Be Panther and I love him.

im in the UK as well. IV got k.boehmei and k.ellioti which are both fairly rare over here and im Hoping to get babies from soon. Julian from muji has some super rare and amazing species coming over from Europe if you wanted some.

I'd love to get more exotics chams and possibly an iguana.. if i had time for them. I was seriously considering getting a high casqued chameleon, but after studying their requirements I realized I simply don't have enough time. I'm a full time social worker working shifts, from next September part time + PhD. I wish I was working from home so I could devote all the necessary time to a more exotic species.
I'm rehoming a sub-adult panther boy (!!!) and I know I'll be fine with 2 veileds and a panther cause the lights and mistings are on timers, I can chuck in the bugs in the morning, clean the poo when i come back and that's me done. Would I be able to do it with more gentle species? Probably not.
If I feel confident I can create a proper environment for Jackson, might get one later on.

Another issue is actually acquiring them. I got my veiled girl from someone who didn't want her, picking up my panther from someone who can't look after him anymore. However, I got my veiled boy from a pet store.. and that was a huge mistake, he had coccidia and pinworms and barely made it. That shop is pretty much the only place in Scotland where you can get something else but veileds. Naturally I'm not buying anything from them ever again.

Anyhow, my point is that some people would like to have a small zoo at home but various issues (e.g. lack of time/space/money, etc) interfere.
