This is the first time i've been able to hold Trogdor, he tries to bite me as soon as I come close, as this video proves http://vimeo.com/5228283

I made a decision today that even if he bit me I was going to hold him. I don't want to stress him out but I also don't want him to get to a point where he becomes too mean.

I reached in and he barked but jumped on my hand and brightened up right away, I let him climb all over then after about 5 minutes I put him back and he went back to being a grump.

That's a good start. I'm sure he will get better. It is also a good thing that you will continue to pick him up, even if he acts a little aggressive.
I like that when you put him away, it is on a positive note. You are not putting him away when he gets aggressive. Hopefully this way, he will learn that he needs to be good to be put back in the cage. Not the other away around where he might associate that biting = being put back in the cage.
