Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - Male, Blue Barred Ambilobe. Approx 1.5 years old, been in my care for 2 months.
Handling - Handled once a month for 2-3 minutes.
Feeding - Feeding 8-10 crickets every other day, 3-5 superworms per week. recently introduced Hornworms. Crickets+Superworms fed carrots, romaine, bread crumbs, sweet and regular potatoes.
Supplements - Exoterra Calcium dusting with feeding, Exoterra C+D3 twice per month, Reptivite+D3 twice per month.
Watering - Hand Mist Average 3x a day, 1min+ Chameleon sometimes drinks right from mister, otherwise very rarely seen drinking. Same method used by previous owner
Fecal Description - Droppings have been firm and dark brown, urates firm and orange tinted.
History - His appetite has not decreased any, however he seems a little lethargic the past two days, but he still moves around for food and basking. No problems have occurred until recent. Previous owner supplied both calcium supplements but never gave cham vitamins? Sometimes he seems aggravated over nothing, puffing up and opening his mouth, observed from afar.

Humidity - 40-75%
Plants - Using Umbrella plant
Placement - Cage is located in low traffic corner, bottom is 2 feet off ground.
Location - Located in Michigan

Current Problem - Chameleon has exhibited normal behaviour and seemed to adjust just fine to the move, last night however I noticed swelling around his neck, He doesn't mind me touching him when approached from below so I touched the swelling and it seemed very squishy/airy. I can't seem to find much information on this problem and I am very worried. It seems that the swelling has slightly gone down today, but it is still present. looks like two lumps at base of neck. This was noticed the same day I fed him two horn worms for the first time. I was a little worried about dehydration because of the color of his urates? but he shows no other symptoms. I do have access to a vet, however he seems to be in good shape other than the swelling so I have not resorted to that yet. I would appreciate any feedback and opinions on this problem. I've attached before and after pics.

Hello and welcome to the forums. Yes, your chameleon is exhibiting Gular Edema. The good news is it is not fatal and your chameleon can live a very normal life with it. I took in a chameleon that the previous owner thought had "man boobs" and said he had them for over two years. He went on to live another two years with me and passed away at the age of 6. That is the good news....the bad news is there really is no cure as there is no medicine that will magically make it go away. No one has yet to prove where it actually comes from. Speculation is over supplementation,, but that was the not the case with mine. If you search on here, you will find many threads on this subject and opinions and debates on what causes it. Unfortunately, it never really seems to go away permanently and it seems like once a chameleon gets it, they have it for the duration of their life. It will come and go in severity. It might not be the prettiest to look at, but I can tell you it will not compromise their quality of life.

If you go into the green search bar click on that, then type in the keyword "Gular Edema" you will find pages and pages of threads on this subject.

Thank you for such a quick response! I'm relatively new to chameleons, but have already developed a deep love and admiration for them, so naturally I was extremely worried at the first sign of something wrong. The help is much appreciated, and so is any other advice! I look forward to continuing membership in chameleonforums.

Sorry, just getting back to you! I am glad I put your mind at ease. It seems to be a somewhat common condition as you will see from all the threads there are on the subject. Like I said, nothing that is going to kill him. So glad you found the forums as these little creatures are amazing but complex all in one and many questions arise on a daily basis when you keep them. And yes, you can get attached to them very easily especially if you have a sweet one..
