Any body on here have a green iguana? I just bought one today and was just looking to see if there was some care perks. thanks

yes.. please.. what i want to know is do they smell? Would it stink up my house? i plan on cleaning the enclosure once a week.. also i have a female.. do you know if they're like chameleons and will lay eggs regardless if no male is present? and last, lighting.. is a ReptiSun 5.0 UVB O.K. for them?

They don't smell themselves, but their poop smells atrocious! And it's extremely messy. Unlike chams it comes out in a huge stinky puddle that goes everywhere, usually in their water dish, but not always. So the enclosure itself shouldn't stink, but when they poop you'll know it! I know my ig's schedule when she's indoor for the winter time so when it's time for her to poop I put her in the bath tub with a little warm water and she does her business there, and immediately hops out and down the drain it goes followed by a good Clorox soaking. Very clean! You could get your used to that routine early and avoid some of the mess. I wanna say mine goes about once a week, and she usually looks fatter when it's time.
I would use a reptisun 10.0 instead of the 5.0 because they are usually in the sun more than chams are. I keep mine outdoors as much as possible in Texas. Plus they need pretty high humidity like chams. Their basking spot should be around 95-100 or so.
A female will indeed lay infertile eggs without a male, and unfortunately iguanas really have a hard time laying eggs in captivity for some reason. Mine got eggbound with her first clutch and had to be spayed. I much prefer it that way because I've never had to worry about eggs again! She was a little than a year old if I remember right and looked very bloated and would stand with her belly off the ground looking very uncomfortable. Something to watch for...
They are prone to MBD just like chams so lots of calcium and good quality greens (mustards, collards, turnips, dandelions). Mine loves squash and hibiscus flowers too. If you want to give her a treat bananas are irresistible! But not very nutritious so only ocassionally. Don't give the canned iguana diets, or pellets or dog/cat food. Igs should get only fresh greens with ocassional fruit snacks.

I have two huge iguanas for about 5 years, one female and one male. I put them outside and phew .. the poop stinks .. it doesnt really smell for the first few months.. but after a year and or so .. boy ..trust me .. theres a smell..
iguanas are not likt chameleons.. the move around fast when they are young and hates to be handled. My advise is, handle them everyday if possible. Feed them before u handle them. This is to associate yourself with food and trust. My female can be handled pretty much like a dog . the the male iguana will whack u bad if u try to carry him. They will grow to quite a bit of size i would say.
This is the third generation of igunas which i have, this first one i had was an impulse buy and i manage to kill it with mbd (yes .. i know i am at fault and i take all consquences). Nowadays, i realise they dont do as well in quariums and sorts, mine thrived outdoors ( i live in the tropics) where there is sun available. They can get mbd extremly fast, so please use the UV and always exposed them to the sunlight.
Fed them various greend and fruits .. or they love bananas anyway ....
They bond extremly well ith their owner, if u r sucessful at taming them and makes a great pet.
