Hello,

I just picked up this book that was just release this month, it is called The Chameleon Handbook. It is written by Francois Le Berre.

Alot of these books written about proper chameleon care are outdated and old info, some still used but alot is not. Well this book really put things into perspective.

It teaches you all about these amazing creatures and gives you alot of advice and tips on topics.

Some of the topics covered are:

Acquiring Housing
Anatomy
Life Cycle
Health Care
Behaviour
Activities

( I can't believe I am about to say this) This book really enabled me to put myself on the chameleons level and think like they do. I am a loser I know lol.

I really understand my cham now. Mood, needs, wants etc...

It is filled with lots of good information (yes it has alot of colourful photos too lol). This book is good for anyone (especially newbies to the cham world) and even the more experienced people out there.

I would recommend this book to especially to new people to the cham world, or for anyone that wants to learn alot more about these magnificent creatures.


The Chameleon Handbook cost me after taxes about $17CDN.

I picked it up here at Chapters, so if your are interested I highly recommend this book.

No this has got to be the 3rd or 4th edition. There was a 2nd edition that came out with almost no updates on the 1st, just a different cover and maybe a page added. Wonder if its a significant update.

Edit: Found it on Amazon. Its the third edition and supposedly has 8 more pages then the 1995 1st edition...

I just searched Amazon. It is the 3rd edition. I'd forgotten about the one co-authored with the Bartlett's. I thought I saw a post somewhere, maybe even by Francois (?), where this new edition was announced as the "2nd." I'll try to find a copy soon to see what the differences are (other than Chamaeleo being spilt up a lot more than in 1995.)
 
That is something I can't tell you, sorry guys/gals, I know it was just release in June 2009 I can tell you that.

Nice to know that local forum resident Dave Weldon has some credit for some photos, good job Dave.

In the preface, Francois talks about how it has been over a decade since the first edition..yada yada yada.

In closing of the preface he left this note and I quote:

"This book never would have existed without passion: your passion and that of so many others, which fueled and rejuvenated my own. You who inspired me and gave me the desire to spend more time and effort trying to understand these beloved creatures, this book-as a testimony, a celebration, and an invitation-is my offering to you." Quoting Francois Le Berre

I really need a cham book, is it worth buying?

I read the reviews on amazon for the 2nd addition and they basically say its not for people new to the hobby and thats its good for pictures... hmmm
 
I just went ahead and ordered it online along with some other goodies about Madagascar. I'll let you guys know how much is new from the 1st edition. Was the 2nd edition something like a compilation of the Bartlett's book and LeBerre's first edition?

Edit: Just saw Chris' edit. 8 pages...hopefully they're all pictures. :rolleyes:
 
I just started reading the second edition yesterday. Based off the reviews I have read and the impressions I'm getting off this thread, should I take this book with a grain of salt? Or is it of any worth?

i want to know were you got the book from because it sounds like you know about ur chameleon more after you read it and how much is it please let me know were at i really want to get this book:):):):)
 
While it may not be as thorough as the Necas book I think it's (the 1st edition) one of the better pet-keeping oriented books on chameleons. It has lots of photos and profiles of different species (if you only buy a book or two this makes it worth the $) and care info. I don't believe much, if anything, about care would be outdated, just some of the taxonomy has changed.
 
To answer your question Kianna2118, I got mine at my local Chapters bookstore and it cost me $17(CDN).

I am going to look at the Necas as Eisentrauti suggested, thank you for that by the way.

Please remember people that this is just my opinion on this book. I am not claiming this to be the greatest book on chameleons. I am just telling you how I feel about it and what I have learned from it. Please remember you may not get the same experience as I did from this book. So please don't blame me for misinformation as you can't be wrong with an opinion.:)

I searched Necas, and only found Petr Necas, is this the author who made the book?

Is the book you are talking about Chameleons: Natures hidden jewels 2nd edition?

I would like to look into it and potentially purchase one. I saw the second edition on Amazon for a rediculously priced $999.99 and that was used. That is a scam if I have ever seen one lol.

Please let me know if this is the one you were talking about, you have triggered my curiosity.

1000 bucks? wow.....
 
That's the one he was talking about. Keep an eye on Ebay, I saw a copy go for $25 a couple months ago. The first edition is good, too.
 
I just looked up this Necas book on amazon and it was only 33 bucks, i don't know where you found one for 1000$?
