Got stuck together and pulled hemipene way out.

I wondered why my male was in the same position with my female most all day today. It was getting late and felt they should separate and go back to their cages so I sprayed them with water. They tried to come apart and eventually did, but it looked like his entire hemipene came out also. I immediately sprayed it with cool water while my husband made sugar water to put on it. We dripped sugar water on it for about 10 minutes but it didn't even move. It is a big blob, not a penis looking thing. He must be in pain because his eyes were sunken in, so I gave him some pain medicine I had from another cham that was fresh and put some KY on the hemipene to keep it moist. Of course my vet who I know and trust isn't in until Monday, but this can't wait until then. I will have to take him to an emergency vet.

Has anyone else had this really bad situation? Will he have to have it stitched it or cut off? He is my breeder and I am sickened. It is only on one side, will it make a difference? Can he still mate with the other side?

I definitely wouldn't be mating him anymore. You should be soaking it in very cold sugar water. Put just as much sugar as you can get in the water and soak it until you get him to the vet ASAP. The longer you wait the worse it will be. Dr. April is 24/7 reptile vet and has experience with prolaps. She has two offices one in West Palm and one in Palm City and I'm sure she'll meet you at the closest one.

Also if it's a big blob it might be an intestinal prolaps which is even worse.

April was very nice went I took Elly to her for the prolapse when Dr. Alfonso was out of town. She gives you her cell number and she does 24 hour emergency service. She called to check on Elly a couple of times and I have called her a few times for consults.

That sounds awful, hope the vet is able to get it taken care of. What a horrible expierence for those chams. Neither one may ever want to bred again, poor things will be afraid.

That was quick. Looks like I did everything right and I was lucky. Liberace actually was able to suck it in on his own and he is sleeping quietly now - YAAAA.

Thank you Jann. Dr. April was very nice and gave me good advice to prevent it for the future.

I'm glad he got it back in. If it happens again or to another animal be sure to soak it. I don't know how much dripping the sugar water on it would help.

My tortoise used to stick his out really, really far and let it drag on the ground and scare me. He had issues with prolapses, so it worried the crap out of me every time he did it.

Good thing he pulled it back in! For the future, if it does happen again and needs to be amputated he can still breed like normal with just the one side from what I've heard. A friend who bred his chams said his one sided male didn't seem to have any decrease in fertility rates.

May I ask what "pain medicine" you have for a chameleon?

I have never heard of such a thing.

Im glad he is better now. :)

I'm glad everything worked out. Unfortunantly for me my first panther was not so lucky. He was 10 months old but was a little guy. He prolapsed and couldnt retract it and ended up having to go into surgery to get it stitched. He prolapsed through the stitch also and had to have another immediate surgery to correct it. The worst part is that it took a lot out of him and he ended up passing :/ I'm glad everything worked out for you though!

What advise did she give you for preventing this? It made me so worried till I heard he was okay and it's not even my cham.
