hey those are some great chameleons you got there.. sucks you got to let them go... but i got one question im new to this cham stuff and dont know all the different kinds yet i would love to own one like this one http://i354.photobucket.com/albums/r425/benton1576/DSCF0416.jpg you just put the picture off could anyone help me out on how to find one like this or how to look one up.. thanks

That is a baby of the genus Calumma, so rare and expensive in captivity. I can't tell you exactly which species it is myself........
Sorry to hear you are leaving completely Mark, but from what I've seen on here I can confidently predict that you'll be back
You also don't have the experience to be able to own one of those or Parsons yet. They are very difficult to keep so you'll need to learn the basics with other species that are more forgiving (like veileds, panthers, jacksons) first.
And Benton, it is very sad that you are leaving us and the hobby, but I understand the reasons.

Thank you all so much for the kind words. I'm still working on the wife to let me have a baby veiled from ChameleonKev so I don't have to completely leave the hobby, but the breeding plans I had are just a forgotten memory now. If only I was in the US or back in Europe where good Chameleons are appreciated more......

I understand you point of view, but I personally appreciate the animals for what they are, it's just not a money thing at all. I wouldn't spend extra money on a pedigree cham anymore than I would on a pedigree dog. Get a free rescue mutt and what's the difference? A well-looked after and healthy animal is one thing, purity of race to me is a discredited philosophy which just doesn't make sense to me. JMO of course

Yeah, but if everyone has the same opinion as that, which seems to be the case, the UK, being a small Island, is going to lose the pure locales. Then where are they gonna come from???
Chameleons are beautiful and come in a massive range of colours, so why do people feel the need to mess around and try invent new ones? You only have to look at the genetic problems leopard geckos have to see that messing with nature doesn't always work out.

I never knew there was such great mistos and falys in the country! :O If I knew I would of definitely had one, I'm looking for a Misto and Faly at the moemnt. I am too a big fan of pure locales.

You are right. Generations of being kept in captivity and selected for changes the species. This is the case with 'pure' breeds as much as for crosses. The pure locales will remain only in nature, because even the breeders who are selecting for pure nosey faly are changing the breed to look as 'nosey faly' as possible. Because they are inbreeding from a much smaller genepool than in nature there are all sorts of problems that 'pedigree' chams may suffer from in the future.
I hate the idea of 'trying' to make the babies anything other than healthy animals. Translucent veileds, bizzare colours and patterns on any animal are no reason to pay extra money and have a trophy animal.
Just my personal opinion, I can see the rationale of wanting to keep the colours and patterns of panther locales as nature intended, but it it not really a priority for me because I can see how much dogs have changed in a few thousand years. From Grey wolf to Chihuahua........ God only knows what the pure breed falys are going to look like in 15,000 years

I don't know you, having joined the forum in July but I have to say I am sad to see you and your most awesome collection of chameleon's go. I have an interest in pure lines and understand your frustration - where will it all end if nobody has the courage to maintain the purity of the chameleons as nature intended. Typical that the human race is arrogant enough to think it can improve upon perfection. Thanks for your dedication and love for the species and I hope to see you back again in the future. Good luck!
