General Purpose Bulb

My incandescent basking bulb has gone out. I won't be able to get a new one till tomorow afternoon. Can I use a General purpose soft white 50 watt bulb temporarily as a replacement. They seem so much brighter than the basking bulbs and didn't want it to cause eye issues.

Thanks ahead of time for responses

If its just for a day it shouldn't be too bad. I've heard of people suggesting them over compact UVB bulbs for temp light sources.

I think you're mistaken. They suggest them over regular UVA basking bulbs because they are cheaper and have a wider range of heat. They do not suggest them for UVB, they suggest a reptisun 5.0 linear tube bulb.

Awesome, thanks for all the replies. This forum's members are so quick to respond and always willing to help. Can't thank you enough

Zoo Med or Exo Terra basking lamps are NOTHING special.... except one very important thing................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................fancy packaging. Oh, and a larger price tag.

I have been using the Philip's PAR20 Halogen flood lamps lately, they work well if set properly. They give more heat than a normal household 50w and a lot more light. because of the thicker 'outdoor' glass they won't break if you get water on them. They are not that cheap... if you buy the 6 pack from HD it'll run you about $5 a lamp ($30+tax). This is much better than buying each one for about $7-8 each, one at a time.

I don't know if it matters.... but I like to use clear lamps instead of soft white. I don't think the soft white blocks UVA..... but I bet there is a more 'pure' light from a clear lamp vs. the frosted ones.
