Gaping mouth

It’s behind her tail. Should it be in the center of the basking area? I have it on the edge because I was afraid she’d mess with it
It should be directly below the heat source so it lines up with the middle of it. If you are taking the temp farther down an angled branch then your temps are off. Meaning where she is sitting higher is hotter. I am willing to bet your temps are far hotter than you realize. I have never seen a cham sit and gape with a 80 degree temp. Once it is up over 85 and closer to 90 is when this is more common. Females should be kept at a basking of 78-80 max.

Female specific care:

As she matures you will have to start cutting back her food. By about 6-7 months she should be getting about 5-8 small feeders each day. At about 7-8 months you want to slowly reduce by cutting down feeder amounts so that she is on a feeding schedule of 3 days a week with 3 feeders. You want them to be on this schedule by the time they are 9-10 months old.

You will not ever want basking to be over 78-80 for her. The hotter the temp the more their metabolism speeds up so we have to keep the temp lower since we are doing lower food intake.

A lay bin should be added as a permanent fixture by the time they are 6 months old so they get used to it and it does not cause stress.

She’s very pretty. 🤗 She is pretty chunky in the belly though. You have been overfeeding her and it may have caused her to produce a very large number of eggs. You don’t want to change how you feed her now! The eggs are already cooking and she needs the nutrition to finish them. Make sure her lay bin is ready. If you want, you can even partially hang a privacy curtain for her so when you find she’s started digging, all you need to do is pull it across. I would advise having some little peek holes or other way to monitor her progress. Since other causes of gaping have pretty much been ruled out, that leaves her with her eggs taking up lots of space in her body and causing decreased ability to fully expand her lungs…kind of how we get overly full at holiday dinners and it presses against our diaphragm, making it harder to breath. Do keep us posted on her progress. 🙂

I moved the temperature probe towards the center and it read 85. (Not good I know) I added a few layers of extra screening to keep the temperature down until she had her eggs and this morning it’s reading 81. I will be rearranging her set up so her basking area isn’t in such a high temp area. Again I will wait to do this until after she lays her eggs so I don’t cause issues with that

What do you mean by added a few more layers of screening? You can not add additional screening under your UVB lighting or you will reduce your UVB output way too far. For heat you want to either reduce the bulb wattage or raise the fixture up off the cage.

It’s not under the uvb. I ordered a stand to raise up the light but in the mean time I have extra screening for my lanai so I cut a small square out of the roll and put it under the heat lamp so it doesn’t continue to blast her with too high of temps. Is there a lower wattage than 50 that you recommend?

Are you using a focused heat bulb or are you using a regular white incandescent bulb? Unless you have that branch really close to the top I am thinking you may be using a focused basking bulb which will produce really hot temps. You want something like this in a 60 watt. https://www.chewy.com/exo-terra-day...MIntuk1v_wkgMVR3d_AB1SvCNrEAQYAiABEgJvQPD_BwE

If your using something like this it is going to be much hotter and not what we recommend for chams. https://www.chewy.com/exo-terra-int...MIweXu6P_wkgMVqG5_AB1PQx4bEAQYAyABEgKz5PD_BwE

This is the bulb I’m using. I think I do need to lower her branch but I want to wait until she has her eggs so I don’t mess her up. If this is the wrong one I can go to the store and get a different one.

Yeah that is going to produce a stronger temp. She is too hot. I personally would lower the branch or hang the fixture and not wait. You can get a plant hook and hook it to the wall then hang the fixture so it is off the top a few inches.

The stand should be here tomorrow but I can find something to get it a few inches off the cage in the meantime. Should I get the other bulb you recommended instead of this one?

That one should be fine you just have to get it raised up more. It is a good quality bulb.

You will be fine to wait until your stand gets there since it comes tomorrow. If it was going to be a few days then that would be different. :)
