Free Range Questions

I'm very interested in free ranging it seems really cool and I don't want my cham to feel like hes locked up all the time. I want to free range him in my room. Its very clean but theres alot of stuff in it to get lost and go under something.

1. If I put enough plants and vines in a clear corner of my room will that be enough to satisfy him not to roam?

2. Should I expect him to go on the floor and crawl into dark places like under my bed?

3. My ambilobe panther is just about 4 months old whats the right age to start free ranging?

4. Right now he feeds by hunting down crickets in is cage and I hand feed him worms. Should I start to cupfeed untill he gets used to it then move him into free range?

Thanks for all the help guys I'm really excited. I can get a video of my room to let u guys know what I'm workin with if need be.

I free range one of my chams 24/7 and all i have is a fake ficus in the corner with vines that go from wall to wall with my lights pointing at them and he has only shown interest in leaving twice...and once was just to get into the cricket bin (unsuccessfully)

if you have a window or something he finds appealing he will probably try to get to it somehow, be it on the floor or otherwise...

some people free range from birth..there isnt really a right age to start at, though i started darwin around 5ish? months.

annndd yes, i would try to get him to cup feed first probably.. or you can make one of those gallon jug cricket feeders so the crickets can climb up the side and your cham can still snag them like normal...but the crickets are more confined. i personally cup feed the free ranging one and im trying to get the caged one to cup feed so he can free range as well.

good luck

I free range my 9 month old veiled. i would wait until your guy is at least 6 months old. I say this becuase then he will be bigger and more easy to find.
Kink my veiled, sits on a 4 ft tall scheffelara all day, but there have been several times i have come home and foudn him on the window blinds, 10 feet away.
I free ranged my 5 month old Hoehnelli (who is sized more like a 3 month old) and he got off his free range, and crawled under a closed door and was found 24 hrs later on my tv cables.
I would also teach your guy to cup feed first, which can take a few days to a few weeks so that he is used to it once you begin free ranging.

You could make a hanging free range. They can't really get down. It's hard to tell from this crappy photo but it's far enough from the blinds that they can't get to them and I can open the blinds and glass door and natural sun comes through the screen.

This is where our male Jackson's is currently living

Thanks for all the feedback guys!

In a month or two I'm going to try what jann did with the big pot and light hanging over it in a combination with hanging plants so he cant get on the ground.
