I'm using 3 of the $39 LED plant lights from Home Depot and they've been making my Sheflerra thrive

These are CFL
And YES. They're horrible.
But they're also not plant lights.
They're lousy UVB.

The eye problems with the CFL UVBs, were intense spot based UV light, mostly UVA, UV light in large amounts is very dangerous and those CFLs concentrate a lot in that small bulb, to try and spread over a large area, that is why they were (are?) causing those issues. Plant lights do not produce UV, so there should not be an issue. (well they do, but small amounts, unlike the UVB bulbs.)
