First grasshoppers - I drop the container

We bought our first grasshoppers today. We has been introducing them to our veiled Thomas and he was curious but a bit nervous, so he hasn't eaten any yet. Just fifteen minutes ago we decided to put them in the largest container we have, because they are really hard to get out of a smaller one. As we're standing at the kitchen counter executing Mission Impossible, I drop the container containing what I hope were twelve pinky finger-size grasshoppers.

They were everywhere (it seemed). I have never been more panicked in my life. I stood there screaming and trying to catch them (my fiancé was calm, of course), and they even got as far as the living room. We've had one or two crickets escape in the past, but this was actually really scary.

Grasshoppers are now safe and enjoying some fruits and vegetables, and I'm still in bed, shaking.

I'm naturally clumsy, so it's only a matter of time before I break a few bones, but man... This was wild.

Have you ever dropped an entire container of feeders and had them escape?

:D Just be glad they were grasshoppers, and not roaches. I can only IMAGINE how you would've reacted if you freaked out over grasshoppers! Glad to hear you caught them. With somebody around here sold baby grasshoppers:(

One time I was out field collecting WC hoppers, had about 200-250 in a container as I was running back to the truck.. I had tripped and lost them all!!!

The first time we got crickets we put them in the small critter keeper containers. The did well there. Then one day, I suddenly noticed one upside down on the floor. We had no idea how long it had been like that, but when I picked it up, what had been 50-60 crickets was now more like 8 or 9! They were 1/4 size, so they were small enough to fit through the slits in the top of the keeper. We saw them hopping around for weeks! I was always scared of them getting bigger and chirping, but this has been about 8 weeks ago and we haven't heard anything, so I'm hoping they all died!

Yes, as a matter of fact... just recently, we had HUNDREDS of crickets running around our house, thanks to me... we had to set out sticky traps to catch them. It was such a nightmare.

hahaha, reminds me of when I dropped my dubias! I am absolutely terrified of roaches - crickets, fine. mosquitos, fine. spiders, fine. But you get me near roaches and I'm terrified. I was gingerly feeding them to my chameleon, by using a pair of very very very very long tongs and holding the container as far away from me as possible while wearing a pair of leather gloves. Well, the gloves made my hands less dexterous and as I went to grab one, the tongs hit the side of the container and they fell ... all over my bare feet. i was screaming and crying and frozen in spot. My boyfriend thought it was the funniest thing ever. He put out sticky traps and we caught them all in two days, but oh. my. god. I was terrified.

I don't even want to think about what would happen if you dropped a container full of dubia roaches LOL...Especially full grown adults :)

I. would. DIE. I soooo feel for you! My husband just about kicked me out of the house when he found ONE loose dubia. I can't even imagine, you poor thing.

Haha that happened to me today, I got my first 20 crickets last night and I fed 5 of them to the chameleon before work today. During work I get a text from my dad saying my sister dropped them all on the ground. So now there is 15 crickets roamin' free.

Oh man, I feel SO sorry for you! But that's the thing right, it's also really funny. Or well, your story is actually sad, but ten minutes after I posted this story here I was in bed laughing so hard I was crying.

There is something so ridiculous about when you drop those things, and there is one microsecond of 'OH EF!' before you start running around like a madman to find these things.

On the dubias... We're both so terrified of roaches! I have a childhood trauma from catching one in my bed as a child during a family vacation in Tenerife, and we seriously don't know yet if we're ever going to be buying any. Our reptile specialist told us yesterday that these roaches in fact need heat and would die outside the viv, but I've seen those Planet Earth series and I know that that's a lie. ;)

My roommates cat loves my crickets and thinks they are his toys for some reason, so every morning when I feed my chameleon before work, the cat is always trying to climb into my cricket bin. The other morning as I was lifting the egg carton out, the cat pounced on a cricket he saw in the bin and knocked the egg carton out of my hand and all over my bedroom floor.....5 minutes before I had to leave for work. There were probably 40 crickets I saw take off in all different directions. I got home that afternoon and practically tore my room apart trying to make sure there were no crickets in my bed....it makes me shudder thinking about it. Yuck!
