First Chance to See Wild Chameleons!!

Motherlode Chameleon

Chameleon Enthusiast
Sunday my family and I are going on a holiday vacation to Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia. This is my brother and I first chance to see chameleons in the wild. I have not got any decent chameleon books on hand however I think we are going to be looking for Chamaeleo calyptratus and Chamaeleo africanus.:):D

If we find some chameleons absolutely.

We are going on a cruise in the Red Sea for 6 days and the coral reefs there are supposed to be the best in the world.

Chameleons arent always easy to find like most people think, you have to know what your looking for, like studying the body shape of the chameleon so you know to look out for something like just its feet, tail, head and etc. They wont always be out in the open instead only the feet but body is hidden.
Go searching at night with a torch the chameleons should glow.
And dont expect to find chameleons in gardens of villas or houses you need to go to places that look untouched by people with very few houses, those are the places where you find chameleons

Your so lucky. Please Please Please, if you see veileds take lots of pictures of them and there habitat.

Cool! Though I doubt that you'll see any C. calyptratus; as they are situated in the southern tip of Saudi (bordering Yemen).

P.S If you can travel anywhere else in the Middle East go to Salalah, in Oman. It really is the most beautiful place I've ever been to. Not sure if there are any chameleons though

I actually don't have a working digital camera at the momment. I was planning on scanning photos from a diposables if I find any chameleons. As for looking for chameleons at night I concur with you and I'm all over it, although I thinks the photos won't be good quality if they are taken at night.

Ch. africanus does live in Egypt and Ch. calyptratus is found in extreme SW Saudi Arabia near the Yemen Boarder. Ch. chamaeleo lives in Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia.

Awesome thanks for the confirmation Chris.

I hear they got some big stone pyramids and stuff there too. Might see some when looking for them chameleons ! They are pretty big and kind of triangular. :D

Have a blast !

I just got back from the middle east yesterday (Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt) . Sorry to say I did not see any wild chameleons. However one from our groups saw a chameleon in a small reptile zoo. I think the chameleon was a small C. africanus and sorry no photos.
Animals I did see were Sea Snakes, Eagles (Short Toed was what the guide said), Camels, fruit bats, and Vultures.

In Jordan we also looked for Ibex, Arabian Oryx, Wild Asses, Ostriches, and wolves. We did not see any though.

The records from Egypt and SArabia are true. However, I doubt that you will be able to see them during your holiday... If you would send me the itinerary, I can see whether you will be at least near some of the areas, where chameleons can be found... They do not live on the coast and the areas where they live might not be really easily acccessible...
And, be careful in accepting the hints from other member concerning how to find the chameleons in the wild. I personally, have found hundreds of calYptratus and arabicus in the wild...) The previously presented hint not to look in human vicinity is totally misleading. 1st there is almost no "wild" in vegetated areas and, 2nd, both species do well and can be almost exclusively found in close human vicinity...
Good luck!

My family and I just returned from the middle east. Your correct though most of the vegetation we found was near human settlements. Our guide said we had a shot at seeing chameleons in the Nile River Valley in Luxor (Thebes) and Cairo and as you said the most significant amount of vegetation was found in these areas. In actuality we were so busy seeing the sites we had practically no time to look for chameleons. The only one that was seen by our tour group was in a small reptile collection in a city on the Egyptian coast.
