"The authors found, on average, 50 species of mammals, birds and amphibians move closer to extinction each year because of expansion of farms and plantations, logging and over-hunting. Another factor was competition from other species, particularly those introduced from other areas.
But the study, published in the journal Science, also found that conservation efforts had curbed the overall rate of loss."

Just another reason not to let your fish, snakes, etc. into areas they do not come from.

I've been telling people for years not to release animals that are not local into your local area. Not only does it upset the balance but the introduced animal can bring parasites and disease to the area that they are released in...and that can kill of the normal inhabitants of that area.

Also while I'm on the soapbox...its not good to move a wild animal from one location to another...when you do that you put it into another animals territory and its quite likely that there will be a fight not to mention that disease is transferred from one area to another. Another thing to consider is that you then leave a void where you removed the animal from so something will move in to fill the void...and you'll be trying to relocate it next. Its best to just deal with the animals you have in your area by learning to live with them.
