Ok so I have a female veiled that I have had for a little over a month, when I got her I was told she was about 4 months old, which would make her about 5 months old now almost about 6. she has been exploring her cage a lot more lately in the last week or so wandering around near the bottom a lot, my question is can she have infertile eggs this young and how do I set up a laying bin properly, I bought play sand from home depot yesterday but am not sure if I need to wash the sand and how to make it the right wetness or dampness for her? Thanks again for your guys help again this forum is a life saver :)

Hello

Yes, it is possible for them to lay unfertile eggs at as young as six months. it depends somewhat on how much she is eating, the temperature she's been kept at, whether or not she sees other chameleons.... They can lay up to 3 or 4 infertile clutches per year, or they can be kept in such a way that they produce no eggs at all.

I do not wash the play sand I use. I dump it in a plastic opaque dark coloured tote, to a depth of 12-18". It needs to be moist enough that she can dig a tunnel on an angle, but not sopping wet.

If she starts to dig, don't let her see you watching or she may abandon the hole and have to start all over again. This can lead to egg binding.
