female veiled egg questions ? help

Usually when's female is gravid she looks fat and sometimes you can even see lumps on her sides which are the eggs. She'll gain a lot of weight while she is gravid and you should always have a scale on hand to weigh her each week. Sometimes though you cannot tell when a female is gravid so a laying bin should always be in her cage just in case. The laying bin needs to be 12" deep and should be filled with washed playing sand you can get from home depot or lowes.

how big in circumference should the egg laying container be ? the cage isnt that big ? can i put it in the back of the enclosure ? and i dont weigh her,ive always been told that chameleons are best left un handled,and mine always hisses if i put my hand on her to try and pick her up ?

They are but I weigh all my chams when I have to take them out for cage cleaning. its become a routine and all my chams are use to it now. I agree with the above post. in my smaller enclosure I used a garbage can I got from a dollar store. I also use potting soil for my veileds with no problems. but you can use sand I would use washed play sand you can get at most hardware stores just make sure the soil/sand is moist and not wet. it should hold a form but not be soaked. my veiled tink is about to lay today . when they have fertile eggs it can be easier to see the eggs. but sometimes when they are infertile it may be hard to tell that is why checking their weight weekly is necessary. I bought my 1st kitchen scale for under 20 dollars at a hardware store (home hardware in canada) but I am sure you can find them any place that sells kitchen supplies. I would keep a laying bin in the enclosure all the time. even though I can say when tink will lay based on her behavior and because I keep track of weight and dates, I still have a laying bin in 24/7 with all my females.

Here is a picture of my tink while gravid. you can see her gravid colors as well as her eggs on her lower stomach near her hind legs.

I always recommend using an opaque container at least 12" deep x 12" x 8" filled with washed play sand that is moist enough to hold a tunnel. I recommend leaving it in the cage once the female is sexually mature so that she always has a place to dig to show you she's ready to lay eggs.
When a female is digging do not let her see you watching her or she will likely abandon the hole and can become eggbound if it happens often enough.

How long do they need to lay? Mine has been diging for 4 hours and is still just stiigin there not laying, its 12am now And i will have to get to bed. Dont want to leave her alone there all night.
