Feeling Guilty

When I came home from work today I looked at my Matis eggs for the 100 th time and to my surprise there were about 300 of them in a culture cup. So I put the cup in the Bradys cage and removed the lid. And as they were being consumed a bad feeling came over me, I felt awful about it. Just hatched and then being consumed. I never felt like that about any feeder before very odd. Must be getting old or something.

iv felt that way too.

Im about to hatch an ooth out to feed the mantis to my 3 new hoe babies, and im gonna feel bad about it.

I have a chinese mantid that ive gotten to fully grown.. she can fly! lol. and couldnt imagine feeding her off.

I felt bad about the live pinky I fed my Bairds Rat Snake. Thankfully I got him to start eating frozen. Never had any bad feelings about feeding off the mantis though.

I couldnt do the mantid feeders, always been fond of them since i was 6 had them as pets at certain points

At least it is over quickly for them.

I used to have a stomatopod that would kill its prey over an hour, punching off all of its limbs first.

I have felt that way about silkworm moths. They have just broken out of their cocoons and I am like ok...do I feed these, let them live for a few days, you cannot set them free outside. so...... I just set them in the cage or on a branch and walk away cause I do not want to see them eaten.. I feel very guilty as they are also cute little buggers also!

I raise lots of mantids and I call my chameleons the "mantis disposers". They eat up all my mismolts and excess mantid. They love the variety of all the different kinds. The hunter becomes the hunted.

I justify it by telling myself expensive chams vs inexpensive feeders oh well you lose.

I have 3 Dubia Roaches I've been feeding and growing for a couple months, nobody will eat them so I just keep feeding them and letting them grow. I'd almost feel bad feeding them off at this point.

If you want to not feel bad you could always set up a hiding place or escape route for the Mantids and the ones that are smart / lucky / strong enough to get away can be kept as breeders.

That's pretty much how it goes in nature so you wouldn't need to feel bad.

You guys are babies lol I don't feel anything for feeder insects. As soon as my mantis ooth hatches they're all going into 4 cages, and when my hornworm moths pupate they will be going straight into Daedalus's cage.

I don't like killing wild bugs that get into my house (except roaches) but the feeders were purchased or bred for one single purpose.

If you feel bad feeding them when they first hatch just think how it feels to feed them after growing them for 5 to 6 months. I try not to mess with them at all. My husband feeds them and waters them. If I had to do it I'd have a bunch of pets.

i have the same feeling when feeding my snakes. i usually buy from rodent pro and they use co2 to kill the mice. however my kingsnake wont eat co2 killed mice so i have to ask the person i buy em from to kill em before i get over there. otherwise id be just like jannb and have a bunch of pets!

I want to feel bad. I have 5 ooths that are taking forever to hatch. I so want to feed them to my Brady's. Sen them over Dean, i promise you won't have to feel bad. i will take that burden on for you.:D
