So my sister just brought me a baby bird that fell from the top of a very tall palm tree. 2 actually fell but the other died on impact. Can anyone help me identify what type of bird it is or suggest how to care for it until I can get it to an animal shelter tomorrow. Here is a picture

I too am in orange county and I believe I've seen that bird. It's for sure a baby and I think it's a sparrow but ate you in a beach area or are you in the south orange county?

It's going to die. It has the stench of humans on it so the mother isn't going to care for it anymore. Unless you want to start regurgitating food, just put it out of its misery. The animal shelter won't be able to do anything.

He's taking it to a rescue centre so hopefully it wont die before tomorrow!

To the OP if you have any mealworms around you could mash or blend them and try feeding the little thing wityh a needleless syringe. I'm not sure what type of bird it is but it has some feathers so doesn't appear to be brand newborn so hopefully you have a chance of saving it. Good luck! :)

That is a very untrue myth. The best thing you can do in these situations is try to get the bird(s) back in the nest. Seeing as the tree is "very tall" taking it to the shelter would be a good idea. Just wanted to clarify that the statement above is not true. Birds cannot smell well and it doesn't matter to them what it as long their baby is still with them.

it is NOT TRUE that a mother will abandon its baby if you touch it - I have worked with wild animal babies my whole life, and also farm stock - do you think a horse will just "leave" its baby if you touch it - they will break the barn down to get to their foal- a wild mother rabbit of course is not going to break down a barn, but her urge to care for her baby is still the same- they WILL come back if you touch them, its when like this, this little bird needs to be put back in the nest- but the tree is to tall - so it must be cared for by us ;)

totally agree. We had a place in Fla that took in all wild animals before it had to close due to funding. I called them one day as I had a blackbird that I found at the bottom of a tree. They told me to return it to the nest. I got up I in the tree and that is exactly what I did. I kept watch to see what would happen and to my knowledge the bird stayed in the nest and the mother raised it just like the others.

This is the biggest load of crap ever! Huge myth, no truth behind it at all even in the slightest!! This bird will be absolutely fine, even if you were to put in back in the nest. Better to do that actually (and the mother would be back lickity split to take care of it), but when the nest is out of reach a wildlife rescue will be the next best thing. They raise and release literally hundreds of thousands of baby birds of many different species each year very successfully. Looks like a starling - too big for a sparrow.

To top that off, your typical bird has a VERY poor sense of smell.
