Failed Attempt!

I attempted to pull my A. versicolor sac from it's mom and I failed... She is generally a very protective girl but this time she showed me what she was willing to do in order to protect her babies. She FREAKED me out pretty bad but I had to pull the sac, didn't want to risk her eating it. She scared me off but I went back in later to try again and I succeeded but with a lot of fighting. Poor girl, I felt really bad. Here is the video!

How often do they eat the sack?
Do you have to wait for a certain amount of time before pulling the sac away from the female?
Before opening it?

It all depends on the spider... Them eating the sac happens quite often but versis tend to be very good mothers I just didn't want to risk it. The sac had already been with her for about a month and a half.

It's up to the breeder when THEY want to pull the sac. Some take the risk and let the mother do all of the work and others only wait about 20 days to pull it. What I did do though was stuff her sac with a cotton ball and gave it back to her to make her feel better, she took it right away and still has it. :)

As far as openeing it, there are also different ways breeders incubate the sacs. Some open up the sac and depending on what stage the spiders are at they either seperate the spiders into individual viles or if they are still too young they put them on a tupperware contaner, filled half way with water, seperated by a mesh, and kept warm until they are ready. Others incubate the whole sac and rotate it every so often to keep the eggs from sticking. :)

Don't know if that made sense, hope it did.

Whoa she ment buisness!

How many eggs/babies are usually in a sack?

Oh I know, protective momma.

It varies but I counted over 240 but not all were good and developed. I am down to 170 right now. Some just didn't make it... Just glad the others are doing great now. :D

Thanks for the information about the sac! Interesting! I had a couple of spiders for a while a long time ago...but never got far enough into them to breed them.

How long will it take a baby to grow to full size?

Your welcome! :)

Growth rate would depend on the species of tarantula, some tend to grow quicker than others, versicolors usually take 4 to 5 years. My girl is about 6 years old but some slow growing species can take up to 7 years to reach full maturity. As far as I know that is it... I don't know how long Bird Eaters take to fully grow, those suckers get BIG.:)

I am both terrified and yet intrigued!! I was unable to breath watching the first video of that GINORMOUS hairy spider trying to get you:eek:...yet it was neat to see that she was trying to protect her babies...ugh , I may be forced to re-think spiders! Please post more, I want to know how the babies are doing!! Very cool! :D

Thanks! I've learned something else today!

No problem!

Tarantulas look cool but im terrified of Spiders espetialy Tarantulas.

I definately will keep you guys updated. If you do change your mind about these cuties, let me know and I will let you know when they will be ready to sell. They are smaller than the size of a pea as slings and takes 5 years to get to the big size, enough time for you to watch your little guy grow and get comfortable whith tarantulas. :D

of all the critters I keep and have kept... the day I bring a spider home is the day my wife smothers me with a pillow... :)

Updates please?! :D

never been into spiders but that spider is intriguing. if you do decide to sell i may want one for the girly.

Wow you are a brave one! Cool video. She def didnt want you to take those babies! Yikes I could never own one of those. I would be to scared to wake up in the morning with it on my face or something : )

Thank you guys and girls! I will definately post some more pictures of their progress... I lost quite a few of them but the remaining babies have been going strong and are beginning to darken up. Pictures coming soon!:D
