Exo Terra Glass Enclosures

I was shopping at the local pet store and saw 2 exo-terra glass cages on clearance. The 18 X 18 X 18 cage was reduced from $100 to $25 and the 12 X 12 X 12 small enclosure was marked down from $50 to $12. Of course I was highly tempted to pick both of them up but I wasn't sure if even the larger of the 2 (the !8" cube) was large enough for chameleons. Are there any species (other than pygmy) that would be housed comfortably in either enclosure? I hate to pass up such a good deal. They also had 2 ZooMed 10.0 36 inch bulbs for $8.00 each! Where could I get a cheap ballast to fit a 36" tube?

you really shouldn't use glass enclosures for chameleons....use screened....if a chameleon misses his food when he is eating he can really hurt his young against the glass..... not only that they need good air flow.....

Hell, pick those up and send them to me! Not even kidding, I'm becoming a little overrun with little individual Kritter keepers.. hahaha.

As for the tubes, home depot, walmart, lowes.

Certian small high humidity chameleons can be put in small glass enclosures comfortably. Sorry I can't give you any specifics...

There is a Jacks pets and aquariums around me that has the same things on clearance also. I asked abut them and they said they are not carrying them any longer that's why they are discounted.

I'd love to get in to a deal like this for those cages. Cheapest I have seen then have been used for about $80.00. Those would be perfect for the other little reptiles I have that I wanted to get those types of cages. My bearded has the largest one they make and he is in heaven, I paid a pretty penny but if he is happy then thats what matters!

Even if you can't think of anything that you can use them for right now, buy them anyways and store them. You might thank me for it later..

I use them for babies w/ no issues. I also use them for my arboreal Tarantulas. The only thing I don't like is that the rock walls dont last very long. That is ok however, because I can build my own rock walls that are far better than what is in the exoterras.

What kind of tarantulas do you have? I just got a baby ghost ornamental (poecilotheria pederseni)

I disagree. To me, this size could be used for babies of most cham species. I would not however house large spec. adult chams; so in that, would agree with your statement.
I own the exo terra 24X18X24 for my tree frogs. They are awsome cages and offer more ventilation than what you would think. The vents in the front draw air through to the screen top. There is also a spot in the back to open additional vents. Easy to clean. I love them.
that is a steal for them. Pick them up. You know you will eventually find a use.

Unless you're experienced, I would recommend you don't put a chameleon in one. Neonates would be OK to house in those enclosures. Higher altitude species (ie. Tr. sternfeldi) would probably do well, if you know what to look out for (respiratory infection, mouth rot, etc...).

Also, a 10.0 would be a bit strong, so you would have to suspend a little above the enclosure.


But hell, for $25 & $8, BUY 'EM!

just to make things clear there was a previous discussion about these exotera VENTED glass enclosers. yes they are perfect for high humidity needing chameleons....but for dryer species screen is recomended....the exotera tripical vented encloser offers a chimney effect of ventilation from the front through the top of the screen. you can buy them in small and large sizes...(vertical ones) there are some that are 18x18x36 wich is perfect for small and high humidity needers like carpets? jacksons? DO RESEARCH AND THEN DECIDE before purchase of one for your type of cham. they do offer ventalation.
