Enclosure for a new Baby Panther

I put a brief history about my experience because I am new to the forum. If you don't care to read it just scroll down to the question:

History:

A little about by back ground with reptiles.

I mostly have had Iguana's growing up, but all ways wanted a panther. Never got one, because of the dedication it takes with care. I had my last iguana for 12 years before he was stolen from his back yard enclosure, even had it locked. They cut through the mesh.

After that I had a few bearded dragons, they are still doing good, but up at my brother in laws now. He breeds them.

Then I tried to go into salt water fish and had a 200 gallon tank and after realizing how much money I spent on it. I sold my entire setup. I took a break from all exotic pets for a while, until I was able to get into my new house (adult priorities lol)

I was just at the local reptile shop killing time and asked if they had panthers, sure enough they have some that will be ready in two months for 150$ and the father looks OUTSTANDING. I was so blown away with this that I put my name on reserve for one.

Question:

I plan on going all out with the enclosure in the long run. I plan on building a very large enclosure with the proper plans and UVB system. Will probably manually water at first, but will be building a rain system. This is where my questions come in to play.

1: Rain vs Drip: Should I do a full mist system or just a couple drip systems?

2: Enclosure: I was thinking about doing 2 sides screen with a wood back with ventilation installed in the wood back, then a plexiglass front for a better view. I have read a few downsides to glass, air flow being the biggest. If I vent the back side and do the two sides of mess would this be fine? Also Would having the front be glass stress him out?

3: He is going to be very young, should I just go out and build his ultimate sized enclosure or just got some thing smaller to start with.

4: Meshing: what is the best mesh and do you ever have issues with fruit flys getting out of the enclosure through the mesh. I am trying to keep out house pest free as much as possible. I understand it is all most impossible when you have reptiles there will all ways be an escapee, but I would like to minimize it as much as possible.

start smaller then make the bigger cage it will be to hard for him to hunt and he will possibally die from not being able to eat. the small all screen enclosure from amazon works well

most people say to use a misting system as well as a dripper because the misting keeps the humidity up and the drip is so he can drink any time he wants. but put the drip over leaves if you ask me so he can drink off the leaves or off the screen of the cage.

the cage you are talking about building would be ok for an adult you dont even have to vent the back if the sides and top are screen or mesh.

good luck

thanks for the response, I want to get every thing going a few weeks before I get him so I know the humidity and temp is 100% stable and I do not run into any issues after I get him.

not a problem. being that its a male you want a basking temp of about 85 and a normal cage temp of like 75ish. make sure he has lots of highways and biways with live plants if you can like pothos or umbrella plants it helps keep humidity up plus they drink the droplets off the leaves. they do not drink standing water like from a bowl or anything. make sure you have uvb lighting to prevent MBD and such as well as a basking light.

also use your supplements. there are blogs and post about them so you can see what to use and how to use it.

thanks, I have been doing tons of reading, actually been researching for the past couple years. I have basically every thing still from my dragon setup's just need to get the bulbs and build the cage, but all the lamps and ect. My overall goal is to start breading once I get comfortable and more knowledgeable with the care.

I have been reading people use regular lights for the basking light as well? I have all ways used those high end reptile $$ lights. What would you say would be the best. I have seen people using both on here, but is there any benefit since you said the basking temp is 85.

i use this for my basking light http://www.amazon.com/Repti-Glo-Com...198&sr=8-1&keywords=tropical+reptile+lighting though i have friends that use regular lights. i just like the security that they are still getting the uva/ubv from the basking spot as well as the normal lighting

for the normal light with uvb and what not i have this. i use both lights on every cage i have... http://www.amazon.com/Zilla-Slimlin...198&sr=8-7&keywords=tropical+reptile+lighting

you will find that the bulbs are cheaper on amazon then in the pet store even with the shipping. and if your a prime member you get free 2 day shipping anyway.
