Emergency trip to pet store

We are going to the pet store to swap out Milly's Lighting. From what I have read on this forum in plenty of posts that her uvb light is to strong for her and could harm her. Not happening. We are also returning the double light (spot basking/red night heat light) with a normal house 75 watt bulb for her basking and will have no light at night for her sleeping. I am highly upset for the reptile manager suggesting the bad lights for her was good. Shame on my part for not reading up more about her lighting. Also going get more foilage and climbing vines.

Isn't this forum wonderful! I wish all the pet stores selling chams would refer people to this site. I know my local pet store does... :)

Welcome to the forum Mystic!!!! There is much to learn and lots of folks here that want to help you be a successful keeper!!!!!
Ask away and you will get replys!!!! Lisa

so are the red bulbs bad for them?

yes an dno. it wont kill them, but its not needed. we use regular house bulbs and uvb bulbs because they can simulate the sun.

red lights might make it so they have trouble finding good spots to bask.

so im assuming since you are asking, you have one, so you can just replace it witha regular house bulb for basking.
:D

Welcome

I did the same thing listened to the pet shop... Then I also returned my lighting.... They were giving me lighting for a desert species. ie Bearded Dragon or such

I now even upgraded and have Arcadia lighting you will be amazed!!!!

This site has been more help to me than the place I got my chameleon, good job for doing your homework!

Do you have photo's of your cage set-up? It looks great!

They say that a red light at night can disturb their sleep pattern. If your house temp drops below 50-55 you can use a heat emmiter which has no light. I use one on a thermostat as I live in Scotland and it can get pretty cold in winter.
Welcome to the forum. :)

Thanks everyone

We finally got the pet store to understand how a veiled chameleon needs a set up. I mean come on its a PET store. You would think they know about each species and this was the reptile manager !! We finally made it back home with the correct lighting and some other things to make Milly feel more at home. We got her some more bend climb branches, decore plant vines to wrap around. More chill out spots.. yay Milly. Some decore tropical flowers, water drip accesseries and a live Camelia plant that is safe for Chameleons. We even went grocery shopping for her. We got her some fruits and veggies and more crickets !! As soon as I got her set up and comfy I will post some cage pictures. Love my Milly :)

Sounds great! Milly will be a happy girl! A good rule of thumb when dealing with pet stores is they'll sell you even the wrong products if it means making a sale. As far as I'm concerned they are worse than car salesman (no offence to any car salesmen here!) :D

Oh....and welcome to the forum - it's really refreshing to see someone ask for advice and actually heed it! I like that!! ;)
