Egg Bound?

My female panther was breed just over 5 weeks ago. I have given her dirt and all over the last week but may not have started soon enough from what i have just read here. Could she be egg bound? she is digging holes now but then just digs another. I am now afraid i am going to loose her. She has not eaten for over a week, she will still drink some. Can anyone help?

How are you providing the medium for her to lay in?
Have you given her enough privacy? (cover cage, leave her alone)
Is the medium moist enough to hold a tunnel?
Is it deep enough? (12 inches)

Are you staring at her? I know I read that some will abandon their spot if they feel its been compromised. I was told to throw a towel or something over the cage while she is digging to give her privacy and only remove it/peek if she moves away from the spot back onto a branch.

I have tried to leave her alone, but do keep peeking. I will try a cover thanks. It is potting soil in a 5 gal bucket, I have now added moist sand to the the top 3" but the bucket if full. It did dry out some, but appears it will still hold a tunnel. I had read she would not lay for 60 days so I was not too concerned until I read yesterday that one had them in 22 days!

Thanks so much I will try this. Yes, I had been watching her alot but was just peeking yesterday and she got all black while digging and went dow about 3" then just came back out. Thanks for the help.

If she is digging hopefully she is not eggbound...but if she sees you watching her she will abandon the hole and likely start another one. However, if this happens often enough it will push her towards eggbinding...so don't let her see you while she is digging. Its okay for her to see you if she is back up in her tree/branches.

Thanks so much for the help. I covered her cage today with sheet and she dug a large hole and has now been sitting in for over 3 to 4 hrs. she normally doesnt move after this time of day, 6pm and i need to go to work in am. will she stay in the hole all night? Is it ok to leave the eggs in the dirt for the day until i get home tomorrow night? How long does it normally take for her to lay the eggs in the hole?:

When Lily laid her eggs, it took the whole day. She was digging from lights on time (about 7am) and was bum down in the hole early/mid afternoon. I don't remember how long she was actually laying them for but I think it took a few hours. She finally finished covering up the hole and came back up to the top of her cage at 10.30pm the same day. I was advised by the people I got her from to override my timers and leave the lights on all night if necessary to enable her to finish the job (rather than her stopping to sleep and carrying on again in the morning). When she came back up to the top I fed and watered her and turned the light/heat off. However, next morning she was still scratching around in the laying tubs. I presumed that she could smell the eggs and needed to keep covering them. As soon as I emptied the eggs out she stayed up the top and resumed her normal routine.

I put the light on and will give her water and food, if she will eat when she is done. but again should i leave the eggs in dirt tonight and take them out in am? or do it tonight? incubate at 74 degrees right?

I can't help with incubation I'm afraid, but others on here will. Wait until she has finished and gone back up to the branches before you remove the laying bin. I'm not sure how long you have to transfer them to the incubator. I do know that you should not rotate them or turn them over - transfer them into the same orientation in the incubator that they were laid (if that makes sense). I'm by no means an eggspert (oops, expert!), but have learnt that from reading on here. Lily's were infertiles so I took photos then dumped 'em! Good Luck!

****I have 34 beautiful little eggs** and best of all mom is ok. It is late so she only ate one worm, but i think she is fine. She was made i dug them up after all that hard work she did *** Thanks again to all***

Do you have an incubation container prepared? A plastic shoe box with 2 tack holes punched iin the top will do along with 2 inches of damp vermiculite. You shouldn't be able to squeeze out any more then 1 drop of water if you pick up a handful. Cover them up with the top and leave them. I check about every week or two. Mine are in a dark closet.

Yes, thank you. I thought it was no more then a drop of water with a pinch between fingers? incubation at appx 74 degrees right? and 6 to 9 months?

74F should be fine. I never let them get over 82F as a rule.
As BocaJan said...they should be in the dark.

Glad everything went well for you Chamer. It's so stressful when you first experience egg laying!
