Educating the pet store need HELP

Hi there,

I recently rescued a very ill Chameleon from a pet store. She went through surgery to remove an impaction and is now suffering from what I believe is a calcium and vitamin A vitamin deficiency. Next week after she has fully recovered from her surgery I will take her to get a blood test to confirm this. I hope to send this link to the pet store in an attempt to educate the reptile expert. He by far has the best/healthiest reptile department in the lower mainland. He is very knowledgeable and caring but I fear his supplement schedule for Chameleons is out of date.

This is what I need from you, the more replies the better.

1. What sort of experience do you have with Chameleons?
2. What supplement schedule would you have a 3-6 month old female veiled chameleon on?
3. What supplement schedule would you have a 7-12 month old female veiled on?
4. What temps are recommended for a female veiled chameleon.

Thank you for your time, I hope that this thread will educate people and save future Chameleons.

1. I have an approx 1 year old female veiled and have learned alot about her and can only give you advice for what I have done and seems to work well for me as my Carmie is healthy and seems pretty content.

2. I use calcium without d3 at most feedings (everyday feedings at this age and I only dust crickets and roaches, not worms etc) , calcium with d3 every 2 weeks, and a multi vitamin every 2 weeks (alternate weeks of cal w d3)

3. Same as 2 but I only feed every other day. heavier dustings of calcium w/o if gravid.

4. I keep my temps between 80-82 ( the reason for this is in combination with limiting food intake I am trying to reduce size/frequency of infertile clutches.

There should also be a laying bin in the enclosure in case she becomes gravid (usually after a years age but it could happen before) try searching laying bin if more info is required.

1. I have helped my daughter with her Panthers and Melleri for over 6 years and I've had veileds for 3 years.

2. At 3 to 6 months I would use calcium without D3 at just about every feeding, calcium with D3 twice a month and a multi vitamin such as Herptivite twice a month.

3. I would use the same schedule above until about 10 months old and then go to everyother feeding on the calcuim without D3. Also gut loading is just as important as supplementing. I recommend a good dry gut load like this one. https://www.chameleonforums.com/dry-gutload-sale-37717/

4. I would keep females at the same temp their entire life (low 80's) unless breeding and then I'd go to 83 or 84.

1. 9 years experience, veileds and panthers. Had Pygmies for 4 months, 1 year jacksons and melleri experience.

2 & 3. I use the same schedule for both. Calcium without d3 every feeding, d3 2-6 times a month depending on brand, multivitamin without d3 or preformed vit A 1-2 times a month. Preformed vit A given at a max of twice a year.

4. To prevent eggs - 80-83 F in basking spot lower everywhere else. Normal temps that do not prevent eggs can be up to 93 degrees F in basking spot.

If there was impaction, I imagine there was substrate which I do not recommend unless it is sifted organic soil. No bark, pebbles, sand, or chunky things.

8 years keeping a variety of chams including veiled, Jackson's, F. verrucosus, K. fischeri, T. deremensis, C. melleri.

The supplement schedules and temps already listed work for me. Nothing really different.

Thanks!

Thank you everyone for your time. I have sent off an email to the reptile guy and will let you know how he responds...
