(DYI) House Fly Colony (or any kind of flies)

Hi guy,

I was testing out a theory i had and i think i would work just fine.

Instead of building a bunch of difficult traps to catch flies, that could take allot of time from you to catch, gutload, freeze and feed the to your pet's.

How about this.

First you get some dog-food(Puppy Chow for example) and break them down real good, i used House & BB fly food(From Mantisplace.com) and some baby oatmeal mix those 3 all together mist a little bit of water on it give it a stir and let it sit out side on your porch or just in the yard somewhere that (any kind of fly) can reach let it stay there for a day or 2, just keep checking that it's soft a moist.

Along with the mixture you can put a bit of the supplementation and calcium in it and there you have House Flies Colony breeding on instant gutload.

after a day or to you will be able to see some small white eggs in or on the mixture after that you can get it from the yard and set it up in a plastic container or as the one i used (also from Mantisplace.com) "The Cup-o-Flies hatching container" and check out on this link:

http://entnemdept.ufl.edu/creatures/urban/flies/house_fly.htm

What the living and breeding environments are of the House Fly and there you have it your own house fly breeding colony.

If needed you could put the "Cup-O-flies" in the freezer for like a minute or so or you could just put it the "Cup-o-flies" in the cage and just let them loose and after your pet is done take it out and start over again.

Tomorrow i'll be setting up some pictures for you guy's to see how i put everything together, hope this thread be helpful for the beginners and some Pro's

Thanks in advance

Stinky. This idea is not anything new.

If you really check my threads out you will know that i'm having a hard time getting my things right in the location that i live.

It's hard to get everything here, the pet shop here have all he same animals nothing close to what you guy's have in The States or anywhere else, it's a bit difficult to order them from anywhere else cause need a whole bunch of papers for insects that we already have here.

That's why every chance i have to share something that no one from where i live has ever done, I'll share it with you guy's, cause you guy have been a bunch of help for me and i appreciate that, that why i'll keep on fighting and searching until i can finally get my pet Chameleon.

thanks in advance

Chameleon Forum Rocks!!!!

The search feature brings up some threads with other ways to breed them and how to select size of adult flies. There is also a seller here in the states that sells a house fly media that does not smell terrible. I cant remember who, but she keeps mantids.

ok i got you but i live all the way in The Caribbean, The Netherlands Antilles/ Curacao just off the coast of Venezuela that's why it's difficult for me.

But thanks for the info thou

I'm sure she wouldn't mind sending some internationally or telling you how to make it. I'll see if I can find her site.

The ability to catch tropical roaches in the tropics makes me envious. :) They are great food and they make cool pets. As do some of the butterflies/moths, crickets/hoppers, etc. Sure you have to go and catch some, but you can also raise them for great variety! And I'm sure it would be easier for you to get ahold of butterworms from chile than in the states.

Damn where were you all my life LOL,
i am now working on how to keep me a great colony of House Flies and if it's successful a cricket colony and some grasshoppers i think but for catching crickets i am still searching for an effective way on luring them so i could get them breeding and for the grasshoppers i can catch some of them in the field but need to find a better way on keeping and breeding them.

but i will use every bit of help i can get.

Thanks in advance

i'll keep you guy's posted, by now there are some Larva visible but my BB 9650 Camera is that sharp so i'll let them grow a bit to take some more, by now the 4th day has passed and they are already eating everything they get, process is going slow thou cause i have a bit of bad weather here Curacao but when the sun begins to shine they'll grow like crazy.

Best regards

Just Keeping you guy's posted on my progress, it's all depending on the temp right now if the proses will go faster or not but the Larva or getting bigger there is some progress i'll post some pictures later on.

Thank for viewing

It would be cool to breed a million or so and try to find a flightless one to breed.

Today i'm gonna catch me some grasshoppers in the wild and try to start a grasshopper colony and letting you guy's know how i'm working it out cause the petshops that we have here doesn't sell live insects so i'll be doing allot of rearing on my own and start selling them here for other ones that are interested in these magnificent creatures.
