properly sized rubbermaids work better than aquiriums or clear containers (they dont like light or seeing stuff), i dont know how many gallons it is but it should be at least 16" tall 21"long, and 16"deep, the zoo med under tank heater in the 4 gal. size provides just the right amount of heat without any regulation , you can get a complete starter colony from buy roaches.com for $35, it comes with crushed dog food, water crystals ,and egg flats, and metal screen. all you need is the rubbermaid and undertank heater, you will need to cut a hole in the lid and i prefer to have a hole in each end , flow through ventilation keeps odor to a minimum, it comes with enough screen for a 4x8" hole in the top and a 3x4" hole in each end , the end holes should be in the upper portion of the container, just glue the screen on with hotmelt or silcone caulk, put the under tank heater under the end with the egg flats, place two small SHALLOW dishes in the container, one with a couple of fully soaked water crystals, the other with a a teaspoon or two of roach food, dont bother them any more than is neccessary for feeding, and you are in business , but i wouldnt feed your chams any of the roaches until the dog food is gone , it helps get the colony going but once dog food is gone ,its up and running, you can just start feeding the colony all of the same veggies that you would use for you cham gutload. i prefer to place the egg flats vertical so all of the crap falls to the bottom instead of in the egg flats, i agree crickets are nasty, the roaches creeped me out at first but they are much easier to deal with than crickets, in a little over a month you should have a self perpetuating supply of roaches
