Dubia Roaches * Florida *

So I know they are illegal in Florida and you can get in trouble for having them, but from what I have reasearched and read, they are the best feeders. So I was wondering if any floridians have any and HOW DID YOU GET THEM?

And if anyone knows of any feeders that are equally as good that are legal in Florida, can you please let me know?

It's really not worth trying to get hold of them illegally, there are so many other feeders which are just as good. Discoid roaches are very similar and many members breed those, also banana roaches, although they are quicker and I think they fly.

I'm just trying to find something that isn't hard to breed, doesn't smell as bad as crickets, doesn't bite, will remain in the cage and not climb or fly every chance it gets. Lol

I'd try discoids, have a rummage around on forum threads and see what others have said about them.

The bananas are good medium-sized roaches and are very active. Ziggy my ambanja panther loves them. Very easy to breed and do fly short distances which I think stimulates feeding, but if have to keep inside could present challenges. I keep my roach bins in one of those cheap plastic sheds from Lowes so as not to upset the fam!

Better LEGAL roaches would be discoids, cave roaches, surinam roaches, banana roaches, and a few others. The discoids are nearly identical to thedubias, and would bemuch easier to find and keep in Florida.

I don't think its illegal To own the Dubai only illegal to sell or ship them to Florida. Suriname roaches are a bad idea they are fast and climb and will get loose in the house. Discoids I cant get to breed Iv had mine for about 4 months with no babies but IT may have been because I wasn't feeding enough. Haven't tried the banana roaches yet because they fly and the girlfriend would kill me if one flew on her. Iv had some Dubai for about 2 months and they are already breeding for me.

The Discords do not fly but are slow breeders from what I hear and will eat there young if not enough food.

Discoids do not fly. They are a much better choice for people in FL. They can be kept just like dubia and start out just as small but get a little bigger (which can be nicer for bigger chameleons!) Definitely get them if you want something just like dubia but are legal. There is a roach supplier in FL that only sells FL legal roaches. They are called something like floridaroaches.com (if that isnt it google them.) My discoids breed just as often as my dubia and seem to have bigger 'litters.'

Hey Pssh I keep my dubai's the same as the discords in bins next to each other . The discords will not breed for me .

I have no idea why. I feed mine the same stuff and keep them the same way. I did notice that they bred slower when I only had a few of them (20) in a 10 gallon tote.

Discoids do Breed

Discoids take a long time to start breeding. But once they do they are very prolific. The only bad thing is that adults can get quite big and can only be fed to big chameleons. I can probably sell you a breeding colony if you need. I also have Green Banana roaches (but they fly quite well) however they are perfect for a picky eater or to break a hunger strike (something about the color green :D ), they do take a long time to breed and mature. I also breed pallid roaches these are very prolific and grow quite fast but do climb glass. The good thing about the last two is that if they escape they tend to dissecate quickly. Best of all they are all legal in Florida

For A Carpet

For a carpet the Discoids are out of the question unless you feed only the nymphs. But you can definitely use the Pallid roaches and the Green banana Roach.

For everyone who would like to know that lives in Florida....
The question is which roach specie is the best?
Meaning, does not bite...does not climb...does not fly....are not escape artist...does not smell.

And are a great food source.

Which (1) is it?

Discoids. They have a little bit of a smell, but it isnt the same nasty stench as crickets. Its not strong either, so you shouldnt smell it unless you stick your face in the roach tub (dubias also have a smell, but again, only when you stick your face in the tub.)
