how large of a tote would i need to get for a fairly large dubia colony? Also, is it true that dubia babies can climb the sides of rubbermaid tubs? And how long will 1 pound of roach food last?

Peronally i use a 24"L X 12"D X 14"H. Tote i found at wally world for 4.00. I cut the top and put some screen on and I mounted an undertank heater for a heat source. As i keep mine outside in a garage. I feed my roaches the same dry & wet gutload i feed my crix. So as far as food goes i dont know? But you will want to get as many females as you can. Ive heard 5 females to 1 male or even more females is the way to go.

i know the little ones are said to climb, but how good are they? can they make it up the sides of a glossy plastic bin that is clean?

If the bin is totally smooth climbing shouldnt be an issue. Also what is a fairly large colony? Some people think 1,000 is a large colony. Roaches like to be in close contact with each other. They dont like a lot of elbow room. If you notice they are all in a clump with a lot of empty space the bin is too big. We do not use such high female to male ratios. it is better to just have large numbers of roaches than to have an inordinate amount of female to male ratio. A pound of roach food will last until it is gone or it spoils. Keeping them heated and dark will make them more active thus eating more.
