Dry gut load ideas

Wheat bran, oat bran. Bee pollen, kelp, seaweed rolls, dryed milk, dry eggs. The list goes on and on. I make my own. And I get the ingredents from the health store and the feed store.

We get items from Winco bulk department. We change it a little bit each time, but basically work around this structure:

Mixed grain cereal (7 grain, 10 grain or whatever)
Oat germ
Rice baby cereal (from baby food section of store or from bulk if available)
Soy flour
Malto Meal for Barley (from cereal section on store)
Dry nonfat milk
raw nuts (that we ground ourselves)
ground dry unsweetened coconut (available in the bulk dept)
**A LOT OF PARSLEY FLAKES (about 1/3 of the gut load volume)

You may wish to add a bit of brewers yeast.

**The parsley flakes are pretty cheap in bulk and provide green plant material. The best part about the parsley flakes is that they cause the crickets to NOT STINK.

Unfortunately it looks like Bulk Barn likes to retain itself to Canada... plus I SERIOUSLY doubted anything that easy exists in my neck of the woods... That just wouldn't be good ole' American capitalism... Pipe dream haha... but thanks guys I had one more question... Here in the south we get a GREAT number of weeds like dandelion... If I let the greens dry out would it still hold the nutrition to be put into a homemade dry gut load?

if you can be sure they r totally free of pesticides you could use them as a decent filler i would think.. dried ita going to loose alot of nutrients, but like said if totally free of pesticides you could use them as part of your wet gutload

Hey guys Im trying to create a gut load for feeder insects thats dry... Any ideas?

I recommend mostly using "wet" gutload items, as this provides additional hydration for your chameleons. It is also much easier to find gutload items that have the right calicum to phosphorous ratio in fruits and vegetable produce than in "dry" goods. By "right ratio" I mean higher in calcium content than in Phosphorous, as we are generally adjusting for insects that are the opposite. Good gutload choices include: dandelion leaves (fresh or dried), papaya, carrot, alfalfa (fresh or dried), spirulina, kelp (dried is easier than fresh), yam, butternut squash, oranges, brewers yeast, etc. Avoid bran, wheat, oats, corn and anything else that has the wrong calicum to phosphorous ratio. Also avoid Parsely, spinnach, broccoli and other items high in oxalic acid /goitrogens.

Check out these links for more info:

Health food stores generally carry powdered kelp, spirulina and brewers yeast, if these items arent carried by your normal grocery.
Alfalfa is often sold in pet stores or where horse/cow feed is sold. Go for pure alfalfa (looks like hay), not pellets that may have additives.

I have some of mine for sale. I use over 40 or so ingredients. Costs a ton to make, but I end up with way more than I care to store, so I've started to sell it. :)

I use Cricket Crack as my dry gutload.....easy cheesy! I also have kale, apple, orange and carrots. Nom Nom Nom.....:D

You can buy it at Tiki Tiki Reptiles.

Do you use cricket crack on silkworms also? I just got my 2 cups of silkworms and I have no clue what to do with them?

Silkworms will eat silkworm chow. Its a man made alternative to their natural diet. You can buy it in bulk from mulberry farms and mix it up yourself. Or they eat Mulberry leaves. Thats your only options for silks. So if you or a friend has a mulberry tree your set. Make sure of course no pesticides or spraying have been done to the tree and wash any leaves and dry them before feeding them to the bugs. If you do feed th leaves, then they will not eat the chow later on. You can start them on the chaow and switch to the leaves just not the other way around.

They came in cups with some chow so I just leave them in the cups? Sorry I am completely dumb founded when it comes to these type of worms. Also where should I store the cups at? In the Garage? LOL I am serious I have no clue and it seems worms are taking over my house ROFLMBO!
