Does the light or the heat of the UVB bulb help the chameleons?

I just got a Zilla 15 watt UVB bulb (yes, i still believe in Zilla) for my veiled and it does not give off as much heat as my other bulb. The other bulb still did not give off that much heat. So is it the light of the bulb that helps in calcium absorbtion and digestion, or the heat?

The UVB blub, which is probably a fluorescent tubular type bulb is not intended to give off heat. It provides UVB radiation which is essential for your chameleon's health.

You will need a separate "heat bulb" which can be a regular incandescent bulb. Don't let your basking spot get too hot though.

good luck.

edit: you actually probably have one of those spiral bulbs for UVB. regardless it does not provide any real heat, just UVB.

I know, i have a basking heat light and a uvb tube bulb, but it doesnt give off too much heat. Is it supposed to give off heat or not? The brandychams guy said it was supposed to to.

Like ChamOh said UVB bulbs do not give off any heat just the UVB rays. You can touch a UVB when it's on and not get burned. Basking bulbs, household bulbs, heat bulbs ect.. provide heat.

i commented on your question on digestion not your type of bulb, you should have a thermometer so you know how hot your basking spot is

from what ive read adult males should bask no hotter than 95 and probably more like 92 degrees i dont go any higher im so worried about burns:eek:

PS: YOu said blub

P.S. instead of asking stupid, lazy questions then giving a smart ass reply to someone who gave you an educated answer, how about you search for the answer yourself. Everything you need to know about how to keep your cham healthy until you get too lazy to care about it anymore is on this site. love u.

Unfortunately the way you asked your question has lended itself to people giving you a different answer than I think you were seeking. It seems you are asking about the purpose of the UVB bulb, not about what temperature your basking bulb should be, although it seems some of the responses have been about the latter.

The purpose of the UVB bulb is not to elevate the body temperature. The UVB bulb is important because the UVB rays are important for calcium metabolism pathways, particularly as they effect vitamin D3 production.

Here are a few articles you should read regarding lighting for chameleons:

Also, exactly what type of R-Zilla UVB bulb do you have? Some have been connected to blindness issues so its important to make sure you do not have one of these bulbs.
