I am the type of guy that likes to light up candles and incense to leave my room smelling nice throughout the day. Can these chemicals and such affect my chameleon? Just want to know because i dont want my Baby Veiled Getting affected my these chemicals

I burn incense and occasionally cigs in my apartment with my chams cage ~10 feet away and he seems fine.. I hope they don't affect him

I think the incense has more potential to cause problems than the candles. As Aussie said, keep them 10 feet away or further, that probably helps. Also, watch what happens. Does smoke get pulled over to the area the cage is in? If so, that's a problem.

Nah it actually goes the opposite direction throughout the house so i think he'll be fine :D

Aussie, how on earth would you know how the smoke would blow in LtGoreWrath's house?

I'm just curious.

LtGoreWrath, then that's probably not a huge issue. However, as you expressed concern, I think you need to give weight to that. I would keep it to a minimum. You know that second hand smoke of any kind is dangerous and you know that it can travel to places you don't imagine....so, I would keep it to a minimum. That's really on the incense thing, the candles don't seem as smokey to me.

I think he meant that the smoke dont go into his own chameleons cage
Anyway yeah i dont use them so much maybe just one a day
It is at a good distance thought
Thankss ;)

I occasionally burn candles in my room. I have seen no adverse affect on my Chameleon. However, things such as cigarette smoke and incense are different. They have a high amount of smoke compared to candles. I start to cut down on the incense. That's what I did with my candles. I used to burn them every night, but since I got Bodhi I only use them when I'm in the mood. I barely remember to do it now anyways.

I'm a smoker, but never smoke in the house. I couldn't imagine doing that to my 4 dogs and Chameleon. It's not their choice. Even people that don't smoke in certain rooms when they have kids. It circulates throughout your home. I have bad allergies and I can't even spend the night in someones house if they smoke (even though I do). There is a big difference between smoking some cigarettes than sitting in it all day. I don't mean any offense to anyone by the way. I just think our animals deserve a healthy life.

My mom used to burn candles and what not religiously. After some time I noticed my geckos making a sneezing noise. A bit later my chameleon started making the same snuffly noises as well. I asked her to stop for a month and the noisey noses went away. Just a short anecdote to think about. For the record, the candles were not in my room and there wasn't a magical wind blowing all the smoke into my room.

Random interesting side-fact if you keep birds:

Scented candles, potpourri, incense, plug-ins, as well as other products containing a high concentration of volatile oils (essential oils) can cause either stimulation or depression of the central nervous system, as well as possible irritation to the eyes, nose and upper respiratory tract, depending on the oil and concentration used. Birds are very susceptible to the effects of inhaled volatile toxins, including essential oils. Any volatile oil (fragrance) has the potential for causing illness and possible death in birds. Obviously the concentration in a product and the length of exposure are factors to be considered. Many manufacturers have started making their cleaning products more pleasing to the senses by including these essential oils also. Products containing a high concentration of volatile oils should be avoided completely if you own a bird. Usually the more "perfumey" the smell, the more toxic the product.

Well said Syn. I remember reading somewhere that wood cleaning supplies were really bad for Chameleons. I haven't use them in my room since, and I've gotten after my mom for using the wood floor cleaner. It has an almond smell to it and is overwhelming to me. Which is pretty bad. If anyone else has read this please shed some light on it.

Stuff like this are actually really important and it's things that us humans don't usually think about. We have been living our life the same way since we were born. So it's second nature to do the stuff we've always done without really thinking about it. We should all pay attention to the little things like this.

It might be little to us, but it could be harmful to our animals.
