DIY cages

I see they are a site sponsor and their quality looks top notch. I've built a few of my own cages and my question is... Does anyone have pictures of how they have the screen in without spline. I see on their website that it says they dont use spline. I'm just curious how they do it?

Just a suggestion- you can purchase an apogee reptarium at a lower price then a aluminum mesh enclosure. They with stand 350 degrees ferenheight because it's commercial grade nylon. The mesh is much more fine and doubled up so it keeps the humidty well and prevents a lot of over spray if you have a mister .

For a long term enclosure you want to go with the DIY or LLLreptile models. I too have sprung for the reptarium in the past but you get what you pay for. The reptarium has zippers which have been known to break and cause the enclosure to move when you open it, scaring the chameleon. The DIY's are good well build enclosures. I am not sure about the spline, never looked lol

I agree with the other post that these are not as great as they appear. Everyone is different though in what works for their setup.

I have a DIY and here is a pic of the no spline edge. There is a solid black plastic material bonded to the screen at the edges. The outer aluminum frame is cut so that there is an inner lip about a half inch wide, maybe a bit less. It appears that the screen is laid on that and then the black plastic is bonded to it. it is clean looking and sturdy.





I love it. I am getting ready to set up my second one tomorrow for my other guy.

Just curious, why are you so insistent on not having spline corded screens? Is it a durability issue?

I currently own 2 of the large DIY's that I got used from a breeder and I couldn't be happier. I've actually disassembled and reassembled both of them when doing modifications and I have to say, they are some quality cages.

I'm curious that's why. I don't know if you've ever built your own cages but spline is a pain the butt. If there is an easier way to do then I want to learn. Can you explain to me how the non spline works on these cages? Could I buy the parts at lowes or homedepot to build my own cage?

You won't be able to find that screening system at home depot or Lowes. You might check with DIY cages. They are the first I have see to use this type of construction so it is not widely available.

I own both the lllreptile cage and the DIY cage. The DIY cage came in with with waves and wrinkles all over the screen, I don't know if the clips are removable without ruining them so I can't tighten up the screen. I didn't have the time to try and sort it out because I had a Cham coming in so I just have to live with it. I don't know if it was just a fluke or if this is just the way they are. I didn't have any issues with the lll cage and at one point the screen at the top became damaged and it was easy to fix because it uses the spline. I do like that the door on the DIY cage is bigger but I think my next cage will be another lllreptile cage.

Hello everyone. This will be my first post to the forum, I've been lurking for a few days lol. After looking at the pics posted by Ninkylou I believe that DIY is using what is called a rigid screen spline made of vinyl. Swisco.com has a video up on installing this type of spline to a screen door.

I love DIY cages! The quality is amazing and they are the best value on the market.

If you do buy them get them direct from DIY, I have seen "B" grade cages on eBay and they are hit or miss. Not worth the few bucks saving.

I have 15+ cages from them and they are great.

I need a 26.5x35.5 screen that is rigid enough to act as the door.
So far I’m struggling with the splined aluminum and it’s flexing diagonally out of plane.
Anyone has any tips on this ?

Could you use a right angle gusset diameter of the frame sleeved over the 4 inner corners, fastened on with self tapping screws?

What size screen framing are you using? E.g. 5/16x3/4, 5/16x1, 7/16x1, 1x1, etc.
Going to a heavier commercial size frame might do it.
Getting "creative" with frame materials might work too.

I’ve tried the5/16ths and the 3/8x3/4 residential type.

Haven’t looked into Commercial grade options so I’ll see what I can find, but yea I’m hoping I won’t have to have it cut from a single sheet or anything that drastic.
