guess i need to go to a digital guage... i went to Lowe's but couldn't find anything.... what brand do you guys use/recommend???

I get an acurite with the probe. Usually walmart has it for 12 - 15. If you use it put the unit that displays the information in a zip lock bag. If not it will get wet and it will die - I have had lots of personal experience before I solved my problem.:(:(

Lowes will have them in the garden center along with the big garden clock face type temp guages. They are around $12

zilla thermometer/hygrometer

zilla makes a decent hygrometer/thermometer with 56" leads records hi/lo temps and humidity and is $20. both ebay and radio shack have a good selection also having one that records hi-lo temps and humidity is useful because temps and humidity are not always stable, that way if you are gone for a day or a weekend or you just havent paid any attention in a while, you will know the temp and humidity extremes over a period of time.

Get a cheap one at Walmart for $7 or invest in one of the expensive hygrometer with the remote sensors. I use both. The Walmart cheapies work great and most times show the same readings as my nicer hygrometer.

not measuring air temp

Heres what I use.

Its only a thermometer but works great.

Can single out the exact spot I want tested
non contact thermal measuring devices are great, but just to be clear, they do have their place and limitations. an infrared noncontact lazer sighted thermal measuring device (like the one shown) measures only the localized surface temp of a small area of a solid surface object (i.e. where the lazer is pointed). it does not and cannot measure ambient air temp which may or may not be significantly different than the surface temp of the object it is pointed at. they great tools, but if you want to measure ambient air temp or anything other than 1 sq. inch of solid surface. you should get a digital therm with a remote probe. when you are using your non-contact ir device, you are not measuring the air temp, you are measuring only the surface temp of whatever solid object it is pointed at. it is not measuring the air temp between the device and where it is pointed. it is only measuring the surface temp where the lazer is shining. jmo
