Dewormer

Hi, I took my 4 month old panther to the vet, just for a check up. I didn't have a fecal sample but the vet gave him a little bit of dewormer, just to be safe he said. But the dewormer he used said "livestock dewormer" I didn't see the brand, just that it was for livestock.

My question is, is it common to use these kinds of dewormer? Is there not a more specific agent for reptiles or chameleons?

Thanks

Good question, first i'd say, trust your vet, he knows what he is doing, if you go into the forum and start double guessing or asking other people you will get different opinions and then you will start to worry, that is what happened to me on another forum, i have a saltwater aquarium running since 2007, i was going to be tank of the month at reefcentral, but had to sell off almost all of my corals due to getting bored!, sorry for going off topic, anyways, believe it or not i have used dewormers before in saltwater, they where made for pigs, and they worked to kill of flatworms (parasites) from corals, maybe its components can be used more universally, meaning just not for one type of animal, i am pretty sure your vet is trying to look after your pet... Good luck and sorry if i sounded rude, i am not trying to be

I've heard of the use of Panacur. I know that is used on mammals, I don't think they make a "reptile specific" medication, just dosing is different.

Tore down my 300 gallon reef because I went on vacation and my chiller took a dump. Anemones died and turned the whole tank into soup. $6k in corals dead in a heartbeat. I was so devastated that I pretty much listed all my equipment online for $800 wanted gone in 6 hours. It'll be a long time before I go reef again. That was truly my passion though.

Wow, sorry to hear that, i'm still in the hobby, with less corals tough, lol, Sorry for the off topic

The only thing that's odd about the treatment is that the vet doesn't know what parasites the chameleon could have and not all parasites are killed by the one medication...so it's kind of a hit and miss treatment in a way.
