Deciding the sex of a Panther chameleon

Hey everybody,

I seem to run into this problem all over the internet and with other chameleon owners/breeders. Its very tricky figuring out the sex of a panther without making an expensive appointment to a reptile vet. Any tips to give, and as an example I will use some pictures of my panther, Proteus.

You seem to have a male :)

It's really not all that tough to sex them, it just takes a trained eye sometimes. But you can sex them right out of the egg by looking at the base of the tail. It's thicker in males and often times has a subtle "bulge" that the females don't have.

Well yours is a male. :)

male panthers are larger, have thick tail bases, and bulges in the vent area, and obviously.. the colors.

Cool! How old is he? I'm still having trouble sexing my Panther as well. Breeder sold her to me as a female but then admitted he was not positive when I picked her up and that it might be a boy. I'm seeing subtle coloration coming in on mine, of course this does not necessarily mean its a boy but I just wanted to get an idea of how old yours was.

I still don't know what I have. I have 2 panthers that are about 3mos old and I can't tell. Sometimes the one has more of a peach color while the other shows very defined markings and some green around the cheeks. I have some female Nosy Be's that have orange around the eyes.
BTW, we (my wife actually) became new Cham owners just a month ago and we now have 4 total. We need help controlling ourselves...lol These littles guys are just amazing to watch and fun to care for.

mine is about 1 year old, he's starting to get a sort of big and when he is stressed he shows flashes of red and turquoise, but I never really could decide what sex he was cause his colors when he was just chilling were just kind of a dull green.
